Silverado Modern

Wow. I can't believe it's finally time for me to start a progress blog.

As you can see from my signature, my DH and I have been remodeling our house for over 2.5 years. We basically started the day we moved in (Ok, I started the day we moved in. Those nasty laundry rooms cabs just HAD to go!). A lot of it has been DIY, but we did contract out for the things we just couldn't do or wouldn't be able to do in a timely fashion.

Long story short, we gutted all 1500 sq ft of our downstairs and then some. Everything you can think of has been re-thought, re-oriented, and replaced. We undid what many previous owners did and even moved the staircase to the second floor. I haven't had a kitchen in 12 months. Oh. I thought I'd save a bunch of money by purchasing my cabs early (every other company increases prices from year to year..); they've been sitting in the garage since June 2005 taunting me. Lucky for us the original architect/owner lives across the street and is like a much hipper version of Santa. We feel like this house was his baby, so we want to make sure that he "approves" of our vision. Fortunately, he is just tickled over the changes we've made (even to his original layout) and has been very encouraging of everything we do.

Our long awaited hardwood, which also had been sitting in the garage for over a year (with appliances, toilets, etc.), will be completely installed in the kitchen today. So, finally, this weekend, we get to start building cabs.

I hope you all can join me in my gleeful state. To help you get in the mood, I've uploaded more than 1200 photos to Flickr. The link is in my signature and there is a kitchen specific set if you don't want to get bogged down in all the other areas of the house.

How cool that the architect lives across the street! I'm sure it really puts the pressure on, but what a great thing to have his blessing on the remodeling. Architects are pretty cool about things evolving and changing, so I'm sure he's as excited as you are to see what his original vision can become with a fresh and different perspective.

Do you live for the day he will tell you, "Gee I wish I had thought of that!"?

We have had some moments close to that (and then we both breath a big sigh of relief), but it's always nice to see him come in and get a big smile on his face when he can see where we are going.

Nicole, I visted your photos. A bit too many to view all but those I saw were ....well, let me say I love your house. The raised platform was definitely an accident waiting to happen. If something like that was in my house I would have ended up flat on my face coming and going atleast 10 times in the first week. You can now use the square footage to much better advantage. Could not figure out what you were/are doing with the staircase. Maybe I missed shots of the final product.

I kept thinking Siverado must be in the Big Bear or Arrowhead area based on the construction of your house. When I mapped quested Siverado my mouth dropped when I saw where it was. My goodness, you are only minutes off the 5 fwy! The next time I go South from Bakersfield to visit my OC friends I am definitely checking that area out. And a lake near by too. What a hidden treasure you live in.

Thanks, Shouva. We really fell in love with the area when we were living in a standard cookie-cutter OC home. Our real estate agent thought we were crazy when we said we didn't want to pay HOAs and we wanted a mature tree. The joke was on here when we guided her to this area.

Next time you are down here I'd love to show you around. Actually, that goes for anyone. Tours are always free.

No final shots of the staircase yet. What we did was take it out from between the master bedroom and den (you can see me do that in the "Den and 1/2 bath" set) and put it in the foyer near the front door. Right now we are still using our temp staircase that's made of 2x4 and is on casters so we can move it when the guys need to lay the floor. Let's just say they aren't exactly up to code - and we've been using them for over a year!

Nicole, I thought the stairs looked a bit "mobile". Reminded me of the rolling staircases you see at Home Depot.

Thanks for the tour offer. I will definitely let you know through PM when I will be down next.

::laughter::

Oh the images... I have an uncle (who's oddly enough an architect himself ) and Aunt that NEVER seem to finish their house until they are just about to sell it. He jokes that he prefers the walls without drywall up... No need to guess where the studs are you see... Need a shelf? Whack... BANG BANG. There you go, instant 2X8 shelf wherever you want it. He'd probably love the temporary/permanent stairs on wheels idea...
