My handy hubby finished the custom griddle cabinet over our fridge. We used 2-6.25" drawer fronts as the cover and a 15" over fridge cabinet cut down to size. I'm loving the built in look of the fridge even though it still sticks out beyond the pantry walls...

Oooow Stacylu, thanks for the photos of the short over the refrig. cabinet. They really help. Boy, your handi-hubby sure did bolt those two drawer fronts together! I was just thinking of using a couple of 3/4" X 3" metal strips. I think his way is much more secure. I'm goina do it!
Thanks too for the hint on the pantry height issue. Looking at your photos the lower toe kick of the pantries doesn't look bad. I was so afraid that it would. I'm now more confident. I'm planning on doing the two pantries flanking the refrig too. The balance of yours looks great and contributes to the toe kick height difference not standing out.
I had not seen a pantry with the wire baskets instead of the pull out. I already have pull outs for one pantry. I'm going to go baskets in the other though after seeing yours. Looks much easier to do and easier access. Thanks for this help too.
Now if your handi-hubby would mind telling me how he built the 3" high panrty bases I would be eternally grateful.
Shouva - There's nothing in our house that isn't reinforced to the max. He actually took some screws OUT after I teased him about it being sturdy enough
Anyway - the base is around 2.5" and he used just 2x4s (or 1x2s ? ) and some plywood on top. It's bolted directly to the floor and then the pantry is bolted into it.
And a sidetrack to the kitchen remodel - fixing up our horrible garage/laundry area... I hate that the laundry is in the garage but with this update it's more bearable! See those horrible shelves - who in the world designed those things? There used to be more randomly placed ones on the right side but I ripped them out when I moved in...
BEFORE:
Mid work - replaced sheetrock, rewired washer and dryer
Boxes hung
Doors on - Applad White.
No handles yet but what a WORLD of difference. The 39" tall cabinets are laundry/household storage and the right side will be DH's workbench area.

Your garage wall looked a bit familiar. I stepped out into mineand looked at my washing machine wall. It's your wall's cousin. . I just have so much stuff piled in front of it I had not paid much attention to it until this moment. Ok...after the kitchen ...and the bathrooms get done... and I repaint the botched living room and stair well paint job....sometime next year...or so...after the holidays...of 2007.
Thanks for the photos and hints. The pantries will be done last. When my ever so helpful 14 year old neighbor is on holiday (2006)break from school. He is such a great kid. He'll probablybe a general contractor by the time he's 21.
Just for you Shouva - click here to see a closeup detail of our custom base.
We installed our floor and finished last night around midnight. I'm WAAY too old for this stuff anymore! It's gorgeous though and I"ll post pictures tomorrow

Thank you Stacylu for the photo. My remodeling has stalled out the past couple of months. Now it is after the holidays....so no more excuses. I gotta get back to working on everything...so I can hopefully move down to be closer to my friends and children.
For the last 6+ months we've been living with a painted plywood floor. Why painted? To reduce spinters in our feet Monday night at around 12:30am we finished our new floor. It stretches from the family room through the dining room and into the kitchen.
We still have toekick to do, probably Friday and a backsplash but the kitchen is inches from being officially, 100% done!

Oh Stacy - It looks great! Goes to show you can't have too much wood! That's really, really beautiful. You know you're going to have to put up that before photo to show everyone what it was like before - you've done SO much work! I bet you're glad to be at the end... Congrats!

Wow Stacy! Susan said it already but your kitchen is seriously beautiful! Congrats on making the leap from painted plywood to a *real* floor! You guys do beautiful work! I love all the choices you've made.
I went back to sneak a peek at the before . . . amazing transformation! It must feel great to see how far you've come!
