Our story began many months ago when we first visited the new Ikea store in Atlanta. We had always hated our kitchen because it was way too small for the amount of cooking we like to do. We never really considered a remodel since we always heard how expensive it was. That all changed with the initial visit to Ikea. We loved the look of the cabinets and they all seemed very sturdy. After picking up a catalog, playing with the planner software, and making some quick drawings in AutoCAD, we came to the realization that a new, larger kitchen was actually very much within our budget, provided we didn't go crazy with new appliances. Our appliances were basic, but they did the job. The only new one we planned to purchase was a stainless-steel range hood that would be vented outside. This would eventually match a stainless range we plan to buy next year. The range hood was just bought on Ebay last week, and the new Ikea kitchen will be ordered Wednesday. We are really excited to finally get going!
Here's the first pic of many showing the area to the right of the kitchen that will eventually be taken up by our new, twice-as-wide kitchen. The back door was moved where the window on the far right is located.
Here's an example of what I want to do with the peninsula. It probably won't be curved, but I can get beaded board and trim and paint everything to match the Duvbo cabinets:
Here's a shot from two weeks ago showing the initial removal of the window. The window is now gone, the new back door is installed, the old door hole is framed in, and the vinyl siding outside is all patched to make it look like the new door was always there. Oh, and lots of electrical re-wiring yesterday, and more outlets added (pics coming soon).
Wait, that's my "before" kitchen! You will be so happy you did this. I took out the peninsula and replaced it with an island, and it really opened up the room. Your plan wouldn't have worked for me because I needed a big island and didn't have quite as much room as you. Your new peninsula/bar will be fantastic! And then you'll have tons of work space with all that counter and the new island. Cool!
