I'm very sorry to report that this is in fact confirmed. Here is part of the memo circulated internally:
Quote:
"...the IKEA Group shall concentrate its resources on developing the IKEA stores as the only sales channel and to make an even more attractive shopping experience for our customers. ... In the future, there will be no further investments to develop the Home Shopping or Online Sales channel.
The decision by the board is based on the conviction that IKEA can give customers the best offer and the lowest price by making the range available only through IKEA stores" - Anders Dahlvig
It goes on to say that if home shopping is offered again in the future, it must be possible to do it with the lowest cost and best service possible. It does say that decisions about Home Shopping Channels that are currently in place have not been made yet and any decisions will be communicated at a later date.
Obviously I don't have any answers about how IKEAFANS who are planning a kitchen or other purchase to be ordered through IKEA Direct will be affected, but I'll surely let you know when I do. Sorry, guys!

This sounds like a great business opportunity for some of the IKEA Fans! Not only could they help design and plan the IKEA kitchens, they could order the components at an IKEA, pick up the order, deliver it, and help install and modify everything.
We know there is a demand out there, someone should fill that gap in the IKEA services.
pardon me, but i really think "i told you so" is counter productive to the spirit of this site. We get a lot of different information from different sources and we have had times where folks post information which turns out to be not true, which is why your initial information was taken with a grain of salt. That should be simple enough to understand and really should not be met with "i told you so"....
thank you.
See told you that it was true. Now we gotta wait until the 3rd week of January for the CEO to make a final decision.
So you did. And this time your information was correct. In future, however, we will still be prudent enough to note that information received is not confirmed, unless and until it IS confirmed. Including the information you just posted regarding the third week of January for the final decision.
Kind of helps us decide whether to keep things in the realm of "gossip" or elevate them to the realm of "useful information". People come here for useful information, and that's what we strive to give!
Just saw this thread while doing a search on the forums, and I have say I am very disappointed if this is true. My experience with Ikea Direct was a pleasant one and I guess I got my kitchen order in before the change takes place. While I understand its not for everyone, online shopping works for me because I don't live near a store (4 hrs away) and do alot of shopping online because of ease and convenience of it, and not just with Ikea. Frankly I'm a bit surprised Ikea is going away from internet shopping when other retailers are embracing it. Having said that, I do think their system is very awkward, in that you can't simply place your order over the internet and be done...you have to pick it out online and then a rep calls you back later for payment info. And even then you don't know what is actually available thru Ikea Direct. All in all that is a bit archaic IMO. If anything, I'd think they would try to improve these services rather than cancel them altogether. Like others have mentioned, I'd think they'll take a hit in the NA market. We don't have that many stores here anyway.
Anyway, I was planning on ordering a closet system but wasn't quite ready to do so, but am now concerned I may have to push it ahead of my timeframe because of this.
Any idea of when the phasing out of online is going to occur? Any updates?
It was decided that Home Shopping will remain, but no further money will be invested to develop it more. So much money was blown on upgrading to e-commerce. There were so many problems. Accommadations had to be given for people's cards being charged over & over. It still pretty much sucks.
