What's the deal with Ikea Direct shipping??? - Trade tips on getting through to the kitchen department, phone and fax ordering, what to do about returns, and dealing with issues and problems after the fact - from a distance..
I just tried to order a $9.99 bycast leather cleaner from the online website. Shipping was $21.00. Is this coming direct from Sweden where particle board is magically created?
I agree 100% You can ship things a LOT cheaper than what Ikea charges. Seriously, I was going to buy a single set of kitchen drawer handles at $3.99 and shipping is $23.00
Really? WTF? standard US mail or Priority mail isn't even that much. Should be more like $5.00 s&
h
.
And shipping furniture should be a loootttt cheaper as well. Now way does it cost $700-$800 to ship a couch. When you can buy from anyone else and as same value of product at a much lower cost of shipping. They should take lessons from Amazon or Ebay. Get with the program Ikea and hurry up at it!
H definition
H can be a stand-in for Height or when followed by *** can have an entirely different meaning.
I just went to ikea to look at 2 malm beds, 2 spring mattresses, 1 memory foam mattress. Total came out to $1260.
So to get a general feel of how much it would cost me to get all of this here I set out to do some research. U-haul trailer would have cost me about $30 to rent +$20 for tow hitch ball thingie. Unfortunately I have 2 bad knees a bad back and a bad neck so there is no way I would want to lift all of the stuff and then carry it and then lug it to 2nd floor of my townhome.
So... other option was in store delivery. What a rip off. I am sorry but it just is. They charge a delivery fee of $89 and then on top of that they also wanted to charge me $40 to pick up all the things on that shelf, bring them to register and drop them off 100ft away from register for a total distance of 200ft. Eh? I can get a floor associate to help me load these things up on 3-4 carts and bring them to the delivery place absolutely free so what warrants a $40 charge?
Completely baffled by that I chose to do the honorable thing and retreat home (since I dont HAVE to buy anything right this minute) and decided to look up the online delivery option. They wanted to charge me $130 for delivery from warehouse. Ok... but why so much? They seemed to have matched it with what they call "Pick and deliver" option in store... so would that imply that their "warehouse" is also a store?!
Naturally moving companies are out of my price range so I guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and dish out $130.
If it was not for the mattresses I would have delivered everything myself on my truck. Heck they even rolled up the spring mattresses and made them compact so they would definitely fit in the back of my tacoma. Unfortunately memory foam mattress comes in a box and is bulky. I do not have a roof rack nor it would fit in the back because of camper shell and while loading it to a trailer would still be 3 times cheaper... I will not be able to carry it upstairs even with friends help.
My townhome has 2 stair landings and entrance to stair is funky so mattress would have to be tilted and raised and when on top landing it would have to be navigated over the railing.
Ikea have delivered a bunk bed to my college dorm way back in 2004 and I had similar dilemma. Except that at the time they also wanted to charge me additional fee for each flight of stairs. In the end I just told them to deliver it downstairs and along and behold 2 latino guys showed up in unmarked delivery vehicle, unloaded the bed and carried it 3 stories up. I gave them a $20 tip saving myself about $150 that ikea would have charged me.
So... to sum it up.
Ikea's flat delivery rate is fantastic on large orders but craptastic on smaller orders. If it was not for the mattress we would not be having this conversation. Grrrr.
IKEA Direct
has limited stock and shipping can be excessive. There is another option: order through the home shopping department at IKEA
Pittsburgh
or
Houston
.
Pittsburgh's department operates every day of the week, 10am-5pm, and depending upon the item they can find the best shipping option available. Larger furniture usually needs to be shipped via a freight service, but that leather cleaner would not be anywhere near $21 for shipping. They use FedEx Ground service.
I don't know as much about Houston's department, but they should be set up similarly. Their customer number is 713-688-7867. I'm not sure about their hours of operation, though.

Dulci is right on - IKEA shipping charges are based on the actual cost...there is no allowance for shipping built into IKEA item pricing as the whole concept focusses on self-serve and store pick-up.
