Anyone know if Ikea will ship an order out of the country...i.e. to a country that does not have Ikea?

petonza has ordered and had her kitchen cabinets shipped to the Virgin Islands - here's one of her threads. She ordered in person in Seattle (her mom lives there).

I actually viewed the cabs at IKEA Seattle (and also picked up some small stuff there), but ordered through IKEA Direct.

1. If you are trying to call the 1-800 number and it is ALWAYS busy, that is because the number is not accessible outside of the states. I have a direct number for you if you would like it. Just PM me.

2. IKEA will not ship outside of the states for you but they will ship to your dock. After that it is up to you to coordinate. I live in the Virgin Islands and had everything sent to Miami, then shipped down to me. It took 2-3 weeks from order to receipt in Miami.

3. IKEA Direct does not sell several smaller items. E.G. Grundtal rails or accessories. For those you will need to establish a relationship with a store and have them process a telephone order for you and they will then ship it to your freight forwarder. if you do not have an IKEA that you would feel comfortable calling, I think I could give you my Seattle IKEA contact. There is only a $7 or $10 processing fee and shipping costs.

4. So far I have had only a few damaged items--from both IKEA Direct and IKEA Seattle. Both outfits did not expect or request that I return the items in order to secure replacements (that would have been expensive!).
--Ikea Direct sent replacements as soon as practicable. The Numerar sink came damaged AGAIN but they have given me a credit. I could have tried for a third time (with better packaging) but it was getting expensive (and depressing) for me to keep paying for shipping from Miami to the VI for a damaged sink. Everything else arrived perfectly from IKEA Direct. My after-sales person is a very nice young lady and very efficient.
--IKEA Seattle. The first order included a glass Nian shelf, which arrived broken. For glass items they have a one-time more policy. They sent the replacement out so well-wrapped it was like Fort Knox. It arrived unharmed. Everything else has arrived in due course but not with the best packaging. I think this is due to the fact that they are not as skilled at packaging for long-distance shipping. In any case I forgive them because what has come broken has been replaced immediately.

Lastly, I know that Ikea Uk has an online ordering system. if you are closer to that side of the Atlantic, you might want to give them a gander.

I forgot to add info about shipping costs.

Because I ordered during a shipping special, I ended up only paying $500 for "handling" but no actual shipping costs.

Everything was shipped on two gigantic pallets with shrinkwrap.

At my freight forwarder it totaled 170 cubic feet and weighed 2765 pounds. My sailing fee with them was only $580.

The kicker for me was the duty and taxes I paid. An additional $600. EEK!

If you decide to go with the UK system the IKEA UK Online system is available right now. They're *frequently* overloaded, so you have to keep trying repeatedly to get through, just keep re-trying by clicking on the icon and eventually you'll get an operator. I've never used them to order anything though, so I don't have a clue how that would go for you. If you decide to go that way, let us know how it goes?
