Has anyone actually ordered through IKEA Direct? Or have you gotten a quote from them? Would you be willing to share your information about shipping costs?
Does anyone know how they determine shipping prices? Is it based on $ amount or on weight? I have heard that shipping with IKEA Direct is quite pricey but how pricey?
Thanks for any information you can provide.

I have not ordered from Ikea Direct yet, but I plan to in the next month or so. I have called them with lots of questions, and what I've gathered so far is that they give you a shipping estimate based on order amount and your zip code. So, for example, for a $4000 order going to Miami, the shipping was approximately $600. They told me that once the order is placed they can calculate a more accurate shipping cost. I believe they ship from Baltimore.
Gloria,
I just got off the phone with Ikea Direct (an 80 minute call ). I had a VERY large order - over $12,000 and my shipping will be about $1100. (Edited to add: This is to Tallahassee, Florida)
The Ikea Direct order process is tedious, especially for a large order, but considering I could never get the Atlanta Ikea to return messages, it was my only recourse. The Ikean who took my order, Yvonne, was great - patient, methodical and careful about making sure she understood what I wanted and I understood how things would work.
Right now I am waiting for her to email me the draft order. Then I will got through the order to make sure it is correct. I'll email any corrections back and once the order is correct, she will email me the paperwork to comfirm and complete the order. That paperwork has to be faxed back - probably since it will include a credit card number and my signature.
I'll let you know how that proceeds. So far I am much more pleased with my Ikea Direct experience than I was with my frustrating attempts to order from the Atlanta Ikea!
Yvonne already emailed my draft order - I've gone through it and except for a couple of "new" doors that she did not have in her system (and that she caught immediately when I gave her the article numbers) everything is on the list AND is correct.
I must have misunderstood her - I thought she was going to email me the confirmation info, but in the email she said she would fax it. So now we have to drive into town to pick up that fax, review it and fax it back to her. Less trouble than trying to get through to Atlanta, that is for certain.
That's great, Anne. It sounds like it was quicker and less tedious than dealing with the store in Atlanta, that's for sure. I'm really glad to hear that they were patient and methodical. And that they will email a draft order! I hope it goes well for you.
So far we have 15% (600/4000) and 9.2% (1100/12000) for shipping costs, both to Florida.
Anne: I know you were really frustrated with IKEA Atlanta - and am glad that you've decided to go ahead with IKEA - you'd spent some much time planning and finalizing your kitchen .. I'm glad that you found a way to get your order in - and that you're not just switching over to custom cabinets - I think it you actually got an estimate for that you'd find that your cost was much much higher than IKEA.
Hope the rest of your order goes smoothly ... and that you'll have the kitchen of your dreams!
Doreen

Gloria,
It is quite a lot for shipping but Tallahassee is not near a major shipping/freight hub.
Actually on the order Yvonne emailed me, it was $500 for Handling and $600 for shipping. That may actually be a creation of the way Yvonne had to combine what are really two orders, though.
Doreen,
I am very relived - I was NOT looking forward to essentially starting the design process over at this late date! And I was worried that the time to needed to order and build custom cabinets would slow things down for finishing the new house.
When we left, we took our three pages of paperwork in to be faxed. The paperwork aside from the actual order are the agreement and release for the shipping, a list of various points that you agree that Ikea has told you and you agree to ("I have been advised not to demolish my old kitchen until I have physically received my new IKEA kitchen." is one.), and the form for your payment/charge information. (I can upload these if anybody wants.)
When we got home, there were three messages from IKEA about calling the Verification (?) Office needing to check the information and make sure they had what they needed to contact our bank to approve the charge. For smaller orders this may not have needed this step, but over $10,000 it cannot be done through the automated channels.
Whew! This takes a load off my mind!
Oh yeah - after I had emailed Yvonne to let her know I had gotten the forms, I got a call from IKEA Atlanta, wanting to finalize that order. I told the nice lady, "Sorry, I gave up on y'all and ordered through IKEA Direct." She hung on me - I guess she's not much of a lady.
So now we have to drive into town to pick up that fax, review it and fax it back to her. Less trouble than trying to get through to Atlanta, that is for certain.
woodswell,
If faxing is a hassle for you, have you considered using an internet fax service like myfax? For $10/month you get your own toll free fax number, incoming faxes are emailed to you, and you can email outgoing faxes as well. They also have a 30 day free trial period if you want to test them out first.

The only time faxing is a pain is on the weekends. DH works for FedEx Kinko's so usually he takes any materials to work that I need faxed. And if I needed to fax regularly, I do still have a fax modem in at least one computer around here - but since going to DSL I don't think I have plugged the telephone line back into the modems.
Thanks for the suggestion, though - it could come in handy sometime (like if DH retires).
