For something this long, shipping becomes based on dimensions instead of weight.

I just tried to order two door hinges online...total for the order was $5. The site took my order, but never gave me a total with shipping & handling and tax included.
IKEA sent me an email order confirmation which said that there was a problem with my order. Someone from IKEA was supposed to call withing 24 hours, and no one called.
So I called myself, and was told that the minimum shipping and handling charge was $17!
At least they didn't process the order. Obviously I'm not paying $17 for IKEA to ship two door hinges. But that, no matter how you look at it, is an indefensible and ludicrous policy.
I live in NYC and don't have a car. So are there any alternatives other than:
a) paying $17 shipping and handling for the item or,
b) giving up half a day to take the bus to New Jersey to get one set of hinges?
I posed that question to the IKEA telephone customer service agent and was told that those were my only options. I cannot express how displeased I am with IKEA at this moment.
Although I have a beautiful IKEA kitchen, this is absolutely ridiculous.
I don't know what to say other than the trip to IKEA via the Port Authority buses has become smoother and quicker. I find that if you take an early one, you can be there and back rather quickly.
You can also post under "Swaps and Exchanges" (http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/swaps-exchanges/ ) to see if anyone has a pair they're willing to sell to you. I'm still going to IKEA on weekends for the interiors of my cabinets, so perhaps if no one has offered them to you, I can grab one for you. Let me know.
We had the same problem. We had left a brace for some shelves in the bottom of our cart (chrome on chrome, fancy that?!) and wanted to just order another set...$3.99 brace, $17 shipping. The folks on the phone apologized profusely and then we just took our business elsewhere and reconstructed the brace from bits and pieces at HD...
But I love the idea of bartering for small stuff! Help friends, save money, etc.
I'm more than 5 hours from an IKEA store so I called IKEA Direct. For any kitchen cabinets or Billy bookcases, even just one, the *minimum* shipping charge was $275!!! Oh how I wish they would care more about their mail-order customer base.

Many shipping companies have excess charges for items over a certain length. Because of the length the packages have to be shipped as "freight." Also, anything over around 70 pounds is also surcharged. For example, UPS delivering a single 24x80" BILLY bookcase (5+ hours away) would be over $300 because it's "excessively" long, and weighs 75 pounds. I'm not saying IKEA shouldn't be trying to give us all a break, but until Ingvar decides to start an IKEA shipping company, they're vulnerable to the whims of the delivery sysems available.
I'm sorry. It just seems that IKEA's focus is almost exclusively on the customer in the store. I've bought things from JCPenney, Target, Home Decorator's Outlet, Office Depot, etc., all online, that were oversized and shipping was reasonable. There are other options besides UPS or hiring a freight truck just for me.
Thanks, Macks, for being the calming voice of reason for me. Can I complain that they haven't built an IKEA in St. Louis yet?
