Question Advice on modding Malm headboard

Has anyone hacked or modded a Malm bed frame or bedside table? If I cut the headboard will the inside be similar to the inside of a Lack shelf?

Any words of wisdom from anyone that has modded a Malm headboard. Any pics of some finished projects?

Here is the background:
We have a Malm king frame w/ a Sleep Number mattress and platform (their version of a boxspring) -- so the mattress covers all but 6 inches of the headboard.

I'm thinking of using the bed side tables but flip them over so the Drawer unit is closer to the mattress top -- I'm guessing I'll need to redrill many of the holes.

I'm also thinking of modding another King headboard to install on top of the one we have to give it more height and then attach 2-3 upholstered panels to give us a padded headboard. I'd also like to cut open a section to mount a recessed shelf in the middle of the headboard.

Re: Advice on modding Malm headboard

Yep - the Malm headboard is the same honeycomb construction like the Lack lineup.

Re: Advice on modding Malm headboard

i was thinking the same thing

but here's what i thought of. Get a pax wardrobe door. It's $100 or less, instead of however much the malm bed costs if you were to buy another. It's Put it directly on top of existing headboard, with glue, and get some 2 x 1's or 1/2 inch plywood strips to reinforce the back (as in span over the point of connection). This is assuming your bed is going against a wall.

I like sleeping on a boxspring and mattress so i'm looking at doing the same thing, but even more wild and crazy. any ideas?

Re: Advice on modding Malm headboard

I should have posted a follow-up on my efforts with the Malm headboard. Our project ended up to our satisfaction - although a lot of work.

Here is my writeup:

And it was featured on this Ikeahacker post as well:
