Floating bathroom vanity using kitchen cabinets?

How is it done? The floating vanity cabinet is all the rage right now, but I'm not sure how to do it. My SIL wants that look and I told her I've seen Ikea kitchen cabinets used. Do you use a 12" and just add some backing to bring it out deep enough for vessels sinks or do you use 24" deep and cut it down? How wide is a vanity usually?

Re: Floating bathroom vanity using kitchen cabinets?

Done. I think pics of mine are hanging around here someplace if you search. I used the deep over the fridge cabinet hung from hanging rail at the back and then lag bolted through the sides of the carcass into a stud/wall on one side and a base cabinet on the other. They're holding up 2" thick concrete counter and a big vessel sink and doing just fine.
If you want true floating, ie. with nothing to attach to on either side, think brackets attached to the wall pre-sheetrock that the cabinets can "float" on...or at least this is how it's done in the non-IKEA hacking world

Re: Floating bathroom vanity using kitchen cabinets?

I used the Effectiv line instead of kitchen cabinets (to have color option other than birch or white without cutting cover panels).

Effectiv as Mod Vanity
