With both Dogs and Birds we needed a way to store both their food. We came up with a pullout shelf unit that can house two tubs for each type of food. The pantry is 24" wide. The tubs are from the Container Store, each holds 40lbs of dog or bird food and are 10-1/2" tall.
It's a standard 24" shelf with LANSA handles to hold the bins in place as well as serve as a handle for pulling the shelf out. The hinges are 130 degree hinges to allow the shelf to pull out.
The main problem and the reason I hesitated on posting this is that when both bins are filled to capacity, the shelf dips when pulled out. We have tried to find other options that might hold up better but at this point (over a year in use 2x a day minimum) it's held up well and we aren't planning on fixing it.
We had originally planned to store the dog bowls between the two tubs but we upgraded sizes and they don't fit anymore. The one in there now is for visiting dogs
I'm sure I've forgotten some details so ask if you have questions. It's been very functional for us and we're happy to have it!

I was a little surpised that it bows down even with what seems like an extremely overengineered 5 slides rather than the 2 that you would normally expect (was that done as a way to try to address the bowing?). However, when you think about the engineering of a drawer slide, it's perhaps not that surprising--an undermount drawer slide is wide in the horizontal direction, but thinner in the vertical direction that is the greatest axis of stress, whereas a side-mount slide is thicker in the vertical axis. I'm going to guess would mean that all else being equal, a side-mount slide would perform better under high-stress applications.
Stacy, that is a brilliant mod! I may steal the shelf slide out idea to make a pull out in the pantry lower than I could put a drawer or wire basket.

has been worried about losing things in the back of the deep pantry.
If I hadn't already gotten our cat food cabinet all designed and set up, I would steal this for that cabinet, too.

Stacy - that's fantastic! I know we saw it when we visited, but seeing it again has really reminded me up how clever you and
DH
are and how many totally cool mods you guys did! I'd love to move or copy this over to

if that's ok by you.

One suggestion for anyone that's thinking of try this mod (which looks and works great!) is to put wires that are attached to the front corners of the pull out shelf (through mounted eyebolt with washer + nut on the bottom of the pullout) and then attached to the cabinet itself a couple feet up. If you adjust the length of the wires so that they are tight when the pullout is extended all the way you should be able to prevent the sagging under load that Craig and Stacy have seen. I'd suggest using an inexpensive aluminum turnbuckle on the top of each wire so you can easily adjust the tension and take up slack if the wires stretch a bit over time.
Seems like an easy and durable solution to keep everything supported? You could even put a snapping carabiner on one or both of the wires to make it easier to get bins in/out if needed.
