I bought and assembled the Ikea Expedit TV Stand, however, my 42" Sharp Aquos (72U model) doesn't fit into the rectangular space with the LCD stand attached, I have to remove it and then it *just* fits in.
Of course I can't just leave the LCD balancing there so I'm going to have to mount the LCD against the chipboard backing. Has anybody done anything like this before? The LCD itself is 31KG (about 75lbs) so my worry is that the chipboard won't be able to handle the weight. What if I distribute the weight of the LCD over a greater area, will that help? What kind of LCD mounting bracket will work for this?
Since you assembled this unit yourself, you know that those two panels have those thick threaded screws cutting right through the middle of the 5/8" thickness of the particle board. It seems to me that if you're putting that kind of weight and stress on the two panels, you're asking for trouble.
How about using the mounting bracket and attaching it to both panels so as to spread the load over both, and then using some kind of cleat (1x2") screwed into the four pieces that define that space, right up on the TV to sort of lock it in place?

Find out how you can get a piece of Chuck.
Just taking my inner IKEA geek out for a walk.
You might want to take a look at the specs for your tv, to make sure you're leaving enough space for air circulation. The TV I was looking at requires 4 inches on each side
Good point David Low. When fully mounted it leaves approx .5" of space between the LCD and the wall of the TV stand all around, I just measured this it's not actually physically mounted yet.. I could dremel some big ventilation holes in the cubes above the TV area and then cover them with metal mesh for support.
Thanks for bringing that up though. If all comes to push and shove I may just buy a smaller LCD or a 42" with a smaller frame.
A wall mount (or a DIY version thereof) will resolve the base issue, though I can't say myself either whether that back panel is capable of the weight.
However, I would definitely be concerned on just a 1/2" gap for ventilation. Granted, it's not a plasma, but still, it needs space to breathe.

You do not want to mount a 72 pound LCD on anything but a proper mount, lagbolted into studs in the wall.
I would suggest positioning the unit against the wall to determine where the bracket should mount, cutting out the back panel in the entire space where the TV should go, then possibly painting out the wall to match the finish on the unit if you like.
Thanks for the input all around. What I was thinking of doing is actually using fender washers for distributing the load over a greater area, you get really big ones that are like 6" in diameter, if I had four of those connecting to the mounting bracket even Ikea chipboard should be able to handle it. But just to be on the safe side, I'm going to mount some thick particle board behind the unit and use that as re-enforcement, I may have to put more course thread screws into the back panel from the top cubes above the TV area but that shouldn't be a problem.

Deary me. It looks like I am not the only person with this problem!
I am sitting here looking at my lovely new Expedit TV Stand and I cannot fit my bloody TV into it with removing the stand!
Luckily, I have a Vesa bracket as it was fitted to my wall in my old place.
Rather than seeing this as a no-brainer, I hope that this is an opportunity to 'improve it'. I am going to get some Conti board tomorrow and fit that in the gap using some brackets and made some batoning to distribute the weight. I can then fit the bracket onto that.
This will hopefully let me get the TV to be in line with the exterior, rather than set right back. So it should look pretty bespoke.
If it doesn't are fall apart and my TV doesn't smash into a thousand pieces I will post some pics.
