Here's the set-up, (R to L): Wall, 36"W fridge, then microwave wall cabinet (over base cabinet). Just open space between the wall and microwave cabinet, above the fridge. Previously there was a 15"H cabinet but the new fridge wasa smidgeon too big so it came out. Now of course, all those cabs have come out and we've bought a bunch of Ikea but nothing for that space.

Ikea doesn't have a 12"H wall cab, so we were thinking of using the 39"H x 12 7/8W, turned on its side, to fill the space above the fridge (40 inch gap between the wall and microwavecab).

The question is whether it can take the stress of having anything in it, if turned on its side.

I also think the Perfekt cabinet would work but we'd still have about 10 inches of gap, alas.

Thoughts?

Only if you're planning on storing cotton balls in it. The wall cabinets are designed to support the load vertically...throw them on their sides and all bets are off.

If you're handy, I'd look at building a plywood box the right size and using the IKEA door to match. Wouldn't be too hard a task, in fact...I know someone who might be interested in the job if you don't want to do it yourselves.

Thanks. We'll let you know--we've just decided we're mentally shot for the day. new floor went in and we're starting to arrange cabinets and realize there is no such thing as a perfect plan.

What about using the 39" wide horizontal wall cabinet? It's 14.75" high. Â*Pam

Pam, I think that one would be too tall, but you do bring up a good point. she could take that cabinet and cut the sides down. Then, she'd just have to redrill the holes for the cam bolts and locks.

Robin - I understand the tiredness completely. I hope you didn't think my cotton ball comment snarky! It's good that you're thinking ahead of potential problems with modification solutions. Another thought is to use cover panels to build some shelves and/or wine cubbies. Not the ideal location for wine storage, but if you don't "store" wine for that long...

Well, get a good night's sleep.

Pam

We looked at that but it's white only. Even with a nexus birch door, I think it would look a bit out of place since the others are birch innards. But I could be wrong.

I didn't take your comment that way at all! In fact, I was so tired I thought, how many cotton balls do I need to store..?

The space really needs to be for seasonal storage or something, as I'm too short to reach stuff on the top of the fridge unless it's riiiight at the edge :? Wine might work theresince DH and I have a drinking problem: a glass of alcohol a day is supposed to be good for you, and our problem is we forget to have it.

Robin_G,I am using Adel Medium Brown, and birch boxes.Â* I also have four of the 39" horizontal cabs (two with glass doors) and two 18" glass door cabs.Â* Since the horizontals only came in white, I decided to do white for all the glass doored cabs.Â* It likes fine to me.Â* Of course YMMV, but if the size works, you may want to consider that option.
