Re: Help convert 15"w tall pantry to 12"

Re: Help convert 15"w tall pantry to 12"

That is correct Turnip. They come in 24, 30 & 39" which means the above would work. See here Help finalizing kitchen plan

To make it easier for you and the IKEAN, you would detail the various parts you need.

This is what comes to mind

- 15 x 88 cabinet box
- the amount of internal drawers you're looking to have
- 153 degree hinges required
- doors required

I'm not sure what else.......

Re: Help convert 15"w tall pantry to 12"

Thanks everyone.

I went to Paramus today (I actually was trying to go to Elizabeth but ended up passing Paramus on the way!)

I made a draft order with the nice Ikean there.

I wasn't able to print this thread out beforehand so the Ikean and I came up with this idea for the doors:
  • Three 12x30 doors, figuring that the the bottom door would line up with the base cabinets (she said they are 30" high).

That would leave me with and extra 2" for the 88" frame but figured we could cut the top 2" off the highest door.

The other option is what you suggest above, 2 12x 24's and a 39" which leave a 1" gap which could be filled with toe kick filler.

I also figured on 2 sets of 12" internal drawers for the lower 2 12x30" doors and regular shelves for the highest one.

Re: Help convert 15"w tall pantry to 12"

Since it's a draft order Turnip, you can make changes to it prior to finalizing the order.

As for the drawers vs regular shelves, specially for the top compartment, I would have drawers. It is a royal PITA having to remove the items in the front to retrieve the items that are in the back. I'm not sure how tall you are, but with the drawers even if you are on the shorter side (I am), it is so much easier to pull the drawer out to retrieve things without needing a step stool.

The only reason I didn't place drawers in the cabinet that holds my liquor is because I am/was afraid that the weight of the bottles would be too much for the drawers to handle. To this day I wish I had drawers there. Perhaps I should weigh all my bottles and determine if the drawers would hold the wieght.

So would you put pull out drawers all the way up and down my 12"w tall pantry? (i..e not regular shelves?)

Also what did you think of the 3 30"h doors and cutting off 2 inches at the top vs. the 39/24/24 plus filler combination?

Re: Help convert 15"w tall pantry to 12"

Yes, I would place pull out drwaers throughout the entire pantry.

As far as which combination of drawers I would use, that's more of personal taste. I would think about how important to you are the doors lining up and how much work is involved in cutting doors down. Folks with hands on experience can provide insight here.

It appears you're getting so much closer at getting that new kitchen. Congrats!

Re: Help convert 15"w tall pantry to 12"

I just had an idea....

Use a 30" door on the bottom to match the base cabs..... a 39" door on the top to match the wall cabs...and then cut down a 24"h door to 19" for the middle.

And maybe I put a blender or charging station in the middle.

Re: Help convert 15"w tall pantry to 12"

Just as a reminder - you can't cut down a door and still use hinges (unless you get a fancy drilling rig to bore new holes). Cutting down can work if you do a pull out, but it's hard to get a great edge, depending on door style (I'd avoid having the cut at eye-level to give yourself a bit more fudge factor)

Someone was talking about whether a pullout could take the weight of liquor bottles. I have a 15" base with two pullouts completely loaded with liquor and have had no problems thus for...

Hmmmm... i didn't know that.... I might have to go back to the 2 24"s and a 39" and fill in the extra inch.
