I would primarily use the space for snacks, breads and quick meals like soups, etc. Anything that the family needs to get to without getting in my work zone.
Note: I'll have a separate area with shallow pantry storage that I would have for baking supplies and can goods, meal-prep. items, etc.
Right now, I'm leaning toward the 30" w/drawers. May utilize the drawers for dinner plates, bowls, etc. Since alot of you have had your kitchens for awhile, wanted to get your opinions before I make a final decision. Thanks!
Ooh. Tough call. I love the pullout, especially for those unmanageable things like bags of chips. But you do lose some real estate to side panels and rails.
I think I'd vote for the 30, too. You always have more options with a wider cabinet. I think there are 30w basket pullouts and you could always put some of those in the pantry.
Is it a 30 space by itself? If not , one pro for the two 15"s is the look of two pantries flanking a base cabinet. With a microwave, coffee maker or toaster, it makes a good landing spot for quick snacks.
On the small wall in question (102"), my current plans (you know how that can change) are to have from left to right: 30" pantry w/drawers, wall oven/microwave cabinet with drawers at the bottom, 36" frig/24"over frig. cab. No countertop in this space. The peninsula would be near for unloading groceries.
Of course, I'm still undecided what cabinets we'll go with. It's not like it's anytime soon anyway. I'd like to wait and see the new cabinet styles. Everybody here will probably have their new kitchens well before mine. But, I think the planner and I are becoming very good friends, even if it has a bit of an attitude sometimes.
When I was planning our kitchen, I REALLY wanted a 30 inch pantry for symmetry reasons, but the wire baskets only come up to 24 inches wide, andI really didn't want fixed shelves. I was afraid two 15 inch pullouts wouldn't be enough, or that I wouldn't like the pullouts. I would have loved to have figured out how to make a 30 inch with pullouts (someone recently did) but it was just beyond me! So I ended up with a 15 inch pullout and a 24 inch with baskets. Love being able to pull them out.
So...if it were me doing it again, I'd do the 30 inch but ONLY if I could make the modification forpullouts. Otherwise, I'ddo 15 inch pullouts (I'm assuming you have space constriants that dictate 30 inches total. They really have a ton of room. I find that my two pantries are fairly empty right now, I would have been OK with two 15 inch ones.
But I secretly wish I could go back and replace my 15 and 24 for a single 30 with pullouts.
Shorty - I know what you mean about the symmetry. I'd like that, too. When I put the 30" next to the wall oven/microwave cabinet with bottom drawers, it looked good next to one another since the drawers align with each other.
It may just be a matter of whether or not my dh is handy enough to make the pullouts for the 30" because I don't want to have fixed shelves either. And I don't like wire pullouts too much.
I could have other configurations within this space if I put the wall oven under the cooktop, but I prefer to have drawers there. And it looks much better on the cooktop stretch of base cabinets having three or four 30" base cabinets in a row. I like the horizontal look. I believe I'm leaning toward a contemporary look for our kitchen and am eager to see the new door styles.
Doesn't the new catalog year begin June? So perhaps the new styles will be in before summer's over. I'm chomping at the bit.
The new door styles are now available for ordering - the stores should be changing their displays soon. It is fairly straight forward to create a 30" pull-out shelf - the standard shelf needs to be cut down a bit and side runners (HD, etc.) installed.
Thanks for the info, Torrus. I've never been to an IKEA since it's a 5 hour drive. So, I'm waiting until they have displays in the new door styles. I'm hoping before the end of summer so I can make a trip to Chicago.
At College Park this past week they said you can't order the new door styles yet. Apparently they even were having trouble ordering cabs to use for a display. They said by June they hoped to have a display up. Most of the people at the store hadn't even seen Nexus Black-Brown in person so were just guessing at what it would really look like (e.g. the new dining tables that are black-brown colored.)
