I just love this rack for skillet storage, and need an extra deep drawer to use it. Last night at IKEA I looked around and realized it could be done quite easily with a 30" cabinet.
1. Start with the basic cabinet and its normal drawers.
2. Mount the middle drawer higher in the cabinet so that it is a shallow drawer.
3. Attach the 30" oven cabinet drawer front to the middle drawer.
4. Attach a full height (i.e. 30") door for an 18" cabinet to the bottom drawer.
The 30" wide extra deep drawer would also have plenty of room for the tallest stock pots.
A nice point to this is you don't have to buy anythink you don't use. For some door styles, the door turned sidewise would be more obvious than others.
Liz - Great idea, but there might be a tiny problem with this: I think the 30"tall doors are actually wider than the 30" wide drawer front. Someone posted measurements on the fansite (lessons learned), and here's the scoop:
Doors:
The cabinet doors come in 4 different heights. Those heights are, in turn, available in varying widths as follows:
door Ht 30 1/2: widths 12", 15", 18", 21"
door Ht 23 7/8: widths 12", 15", 18", 21"
door Ht 17 1/2: widths 15", 18", 24"
door Ht 14 7/8: widths 15", 18", 24"
Please note that the precise door width was about 1/8" less than the widths I've listed (e.g. a 12" wide door is actually about 11 7/8" wide). Also note that the 30 1/2" Ht is used on base cabinets with no drawers. The 23 7/8" Ht is used on base cabinets with one shallow drawer at top. I did not measure wall cabinet doors (so I guess you could add all the 39" height doors to this list). Drawers -- OUTSIDE measurements:
All shallow drawers = 6 1/4 Height
All deep drawers = 11 1/4" Height
Like with the doors, the precise widths of the drawers were about 1/8" (maybe 1/4") less than the listed width. E.g. a drawer on a 24" wide cabinet is about 23 3/4" wide.
Please note that because of these drawer heights, you CANNOT use all shallow drawers in a drawer stack (I had been hoping I could for the 21" and 24" wide base cabinets . )
:shock:Uh-oh. Thanks for clarifying that kmcg. We did measure most areas, but maybe not the exact height of the door.
This brings me to my other question, which maybe deserves its own topic, but I don't know what I'd call it! If I am having custom doors and drawer fronts made, is there any reason I can't use all shallow drawers in a cabinet?
We bought one door each in our 2 favorite styles, and neither one looks really good with the existing cabinet I want to use in the kitchen. It's the china cabinet I made for my Mom 32 years ago, so it's a must.
It may be possible to create a two drawer base cabinet using 15x30" doors horizontally - I recently built a 30x15" horizontal cabinet (birch finish) but needed to use a cover panel on each side to accomodate the 15x30" door - I'll post some pictures and more details soon.
Isn't that list missing one drawer height? The three drawer stack has three different-heigh drawer fronts, not two deep and one shallow, right? You need an extra 1.25 inches in there somewhere, if I did my math right, and the pictures definitely look like the lower two aren't the same height.
