I need to modify a tall cabinet to fit into an odd corner. I'm either going to purchase the full tall cabinet from Ikea and cut things down as necessary or build the whole thing from plywood and put the Ikea doors on it. I'd prefer to use plywood, since it'll be cheaper but I'm worried about replicating the pattern for the hinges. I've seen people post about custom doors purchased from 3rd parties, but haven't found creating the box and fitting doors (maybe I'm a bad searcher).
Any suggestions on which path to take and advice on either?
Modifying IKEA cabinets is so easy, and the basic boxes so cheap, I'd suggest just cutting down one that is the right size. Maybe this article would help: how to build an angled base cabinet
Eesh, that looks like a lot to cut down For a base cabinet it wouldn't be so bad, but for a tall one like that I would be a bit worried about the stability of the cabinet. I'd definitely advise anchoring it to the wall very carfully afterwards if you cut one down.
My GC had to custom drill hinge holes for a mod we did in my kitchen. He had a kit for Euro hinges that he used. If you did build a cabinet, you should be able to line up the hinge holes and re-drill them, maybe using a similar sized cabinet as a pattern or template of sorts? For example, if your top door was 18", you could pick an 18" cabinet and use the holes as a guide.
woodswell, it'd be about half the cost, I think. But you're right, the cost isn't much, so I am leaning the Ikea way. The only issue with the Ikea route is the back panel. For stability, I'd like to use a 3/4" panel rather than the flimsy backing and I don't know if Ikea sells any panels wide enough (I don't remember the width off the top of my head, but it's more than 24").
Emmie9999, thanks for the tips ... it is a bit overwhelming but with all of the success stories I've read, I hope I can handle it.
BTW, I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry about that. If a mod can move it to the Modification forum, I'd appreciate it!

IKEA sells "cover panels" and "oven panels" - depending on which one they are between 1/2" and 3/4" thick and 30x30" to 3x8'. They will have a finish to match the exterior of the cabinets, but you can get ones that will pretty much match the white or birch interiors.
