Corner OTC micro--how to do with ikea?

I'm very interested in the Sharp OTC microwave (although I wish they had a convection option, too). Their web page for it:

over the counter microwave oven | R-1214

shows it installed under a corner cabinet. The only text about how to do this is "The OTC can be installed in a corner location using standard 27 in. wall cabinets and custom trim mounting." It normally fits under a 24" cabinet on a straight wall.

Since I find those big corner cabinets a huge waste of space anyway, I'd love to do something like this, but what would go over it?

Hmm nice microwave. 27" for corner locations is probably so you can open the door in that tight of location. In any case I wonder if that dimension is for cabinets with frames which Ikea does not have as well.

If you need a face of 27" or more you will not get that with a corner Ikea cabinet. Perhaps you could frame out the corner to mount a 30" wall cabinet and trim out the microwave in it. I would not narrow a cabinet because that means narrowed doors. Trimming the height would work though since you can mount the cut towards ceiling and redo the hinge hole. Please post pics of whatever route you go.

Happy modding.

You could use a 24" cabinet (set at 45 degrees) and filler strips (between it and adjacant cabinets) which would be enough space for the microwave, but you would waste some space in the corner.

Thanks, ludes98 and torrus.

Yes, the angled 24" might work out well, since the back of a corner cab always seems inaccessible, whether it's an angled corner or a blind one. I wouldn't mind losing that space back there. Thanks!
