Extra shelves for discontinued Billy?

So I have a Billy unit that looks like it's been discontinued, since I can't seem to find anything for it on the site or my local store. It's a 22 1/2" wide x 41" tall unit in birch, and I need to get a couple of extra shelves for it. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I could find extra shelves for it?

Re: Extra shelves for discontinued Billy?

A store near me claims to have 30" X 10" deep shelves in birch in stock.

I would think that you may be able to cut them down to size.
How many are you looking for?

Re: Extra shelves for discontinued Billy?

Well, really, I only need one. I can get the 30"x10" birch shelves at my local IKEA, and I have indeed considered chopping one down, but I don't know how the veneer will react to cutting, or what the best tool to cut with would be. For some reason I think trying to cut it will cause a lot of splintering on the veneer, but I honestly have no idea if that's actually the case or not.

Thanks for the offer though. Should I be asking about chopping shelves in the Modifications forum?

Run a strip of masking or painter's tape where the board will be cut and use a finer teeth blade on a circular saw ... that will keep the splintering down to a minimum, if any at all.

Don't rule out checking the AS-IS for any stray pieces that could be used as a shelf board too.
