We plan to line 3 walls of a room with glass doored bookcases. The Billy would be perfect. The only problem is that
DH
wants two of the units to be 18" deep instead of the normal 11".
The first thought was just to build our own carcass for those 2 units and use the Billy doors. With any luck we could trim 3" off one shelf, and put it in place with another right in front of it, so the shelves would be deep enough as well. If necessary the shelves could be joined together with a biscuit joiner.
Another thought is to buy 2 Billy carcasses to make 1 extra deep carcass - to trim 3" of the sides, top and bottom of the first carcass and attach it to the front of a 2nd carcass. We could have these joined together with a biscuit joiner.
Then there is the matter of the height extension unit. Could these be built from cover panels?
I know this sounds like a lot of work for 2 bookcases. If it were just these 2, it might be simpler to make them from scratch. But since we want them to match 9 more I think it will be worth it.
Do you think either of these approaches would work? Any other ideas?
DH definition
DH usually means Dear Husband (or, pick your own adjective starting with D).
What color of bookcase are you considering? Some of the colors match kitchen door styles, so it may be easier to cut down a pantry unit than to add depth to a bookcase. Also, will the two deeper units be flanked by shallow units? If so, you could try leaving the back off normal units, screwing 6" x 80" pieces of mdf to the sides of the flanking units, and drilling new shelf holes in the new mdf. Then assemble the two units that you want to be deeper without their backs, slide them up to the mdf, and screw them to the regular depth bookcases. That sounds like a lot less work than your other suggestions.
Another thought - you may want to look at cutting down PAX wardrobes and using them as bookcases. The 22 7/8" deep units have three columns of pre-drilled holes, so cutting the sides down in depth would still leave two columns which would likely suffice for supporting the shelves. PAX has it's own frosted glass doors, but you'd likely have to adjust the height and width to suit the clear glass BILLY doors.
