Hi,

I am just starting to design my first IKEA kitchen....Thank you all for this site. It has been very helpful.

I was wondering if anyone has ever added additional holes for say a dishwasher air gap to the Domsjo Farmhouse style sink?

The guy at the store didn't recommend it but I figure if I start with a #40 drill and work my way up, I should have a hole by the end of the day.....

Thanks,

nrljoe -- Welcome

We like trailblazers 'round here..... I think you'll be the first to drill out your Domsjo....that we know of. Did you do it already? If so, please report on how you did it and how it went! If not, well...good luck!

Hey there!

I'm also on the edge of my seat to see how it goes for you, since I'm really hoping to get a domsjo farmhouse and also get a hot water spigot.

Well,

Right now we are debating it. $199 for a science experiment is not exactly sitting well with my wife.

I have done some reading up on it. I'm planning on using a dremel to cut the enamel down to the clay so you don't chip it and dremel down the raised ribs just around the hole for a flat surface for the fixture. As for drilling, drill slow and with very little pressure. Lots of water to keep the bit and material cool. Start small and go to the next size drill. I've drilled all sorts of materials but not porcelain. I'll keep everyone upto date. If I do go for it, I'll try to document the procedure for others.

Please don't kill me for extending the topic but I *think* it is related... has anyone installed a garbage disposer with the Domsjo? Is it simple or will it be a 'drill job' too?

Installing a Garbage disposer should be pretty straightforward... You don't need a hole in the sink for a GD, it just attaches to the bottom of the sink in between the sink and the drain. You only need a hole in the sink if you're mounting an air switch or other GD control ON the sink, which is strictly optional. The standard switch is simply a wall mounted switch in the back splash area. Alternatively (and a lot safer depending on your family member's habits of flicking switches :shock is using a batch feed GD that starts when you insert and turn the cover in the drain of the sink. Just make sure you have enough room under the sink for whatever GD you want to install.

nrljoe:

You might, if you do a Google search, find some message boards for Dremel users, and they might have some experiences with this. I know I found a message board for router users this Christmas, when I bought a router for my husband. They had an area for people to ask about projects. They might not have drilled an Ikea sink, but they might have drilled others, or similar material!

I'm not an expert at all, but starting small and working your way up as needed is definately a good way to start. However, I do think the bit type will make a lot of difference. Also, there might be some way to brace the area before drilling to prevent cracking. Think of watching a magician poke pins into a balloon: they use a small pin, move slow and steady, AND they place a piece of clear tape over the spot they are going to stick the pin!

I'm crossing my fingers for you, please keep us posted!

Hi All-

It is absolutely possible to add holes to the Domsjo sink. I had the same problem: trying to figure out where to put the dishwasher air gap on our Domsjo sink. I finally decided to do the $200 experiment and try to drill a hole in the sink deck.

After all the worry and research, it took about 10 minutes. I was happy and best of all my spousal unit was very happy that I didn't crack her sink. I used a 35mm diamond hole saw I got on ebay from a dealer in Hong Kong. If anyone is interested, I can post some more details when I get home.
