OK, this HAS to have been asked a million times, but I can't find it. We got the 3 inch rev-a-shelf base cab pullout (from Lee!) and bought a piece of wood to fit as the door. but DH is muttering about the shallow bottom drawer of the 30 inch high cab possible being the right size.
Can anyone tell us the dimensions of that drawer front?
We used a 30" Adel Birch door, cut down on one side. Sandpaper the edges, clear lacquer. You can see pegs circles on one side where it was originally attached to the door rails, but otherwise matches perfectly.
The drawer front would also work, but if I recall correctly, not cheap...it would also need to be cut down because it is too tall.
You may be right- the door may be more expensive than the drawer front-- I just remember my jaw dropping when I saw the price of that single 30" wide shallow drawer front. Either way, you'll need to take a saw to it.
btw I'm confused by this -- "use 30" for the base spice and a 15" plus a "24" for the upper one" upper what?
Ok the pegs thing-- the doors have glued dowels that hold the frame together- when you cut into the door, you expose these dowels. So when you open up the rack, and look at it from the side, you can see a little circle of wood embedded in the side of the door. Does this make sense? I can take a picture this weekend if it would help.
Since the Adel Birch isn't stained, the cut edge blends in just fine. In fact, everyone who's seen my kitchen and checked out the spice rack hasn't even noticed that its any different than the other cabinets. Don't worry, it's going to look great!
I was referring to the fact that we had bought both an upper (will be 39" to match upper cabs) and a lower (30"), as we had a chunk of wasted space in both.
I gave this some thought and realized that the advantage to your method is that you can use TWO sides of the door, which might be good in our case.
I guess since we changed over to Nexus birch (we had originally planned on Adel birch) I won't see those pegs in the Nexus doors...just a veneer? don't know if that will be easier or harder to deal with.
Ah ok I get it! Yes, you could just buy a 39" door, and cut it up. One side will have those circles in it for the hinges, but you can fill them with those round wood things, and it will never show.
Hmm... you're right, since Nexus is a veneer, you'd have to figure out what to do with the raw edge. They're the same color, so you could still use an Adel door, then it's solid wood?
I used birch "effect" veneer boxes w/ no cover panels, maple trim (w/ clear poly) and adel doors, and it all matched--the birch is very forgiving.
Its too bad you don't live closer, you could have the other half of my adel door to play with! (its still in my basement, along with the other leftovers)
