I have a wall 78" wide, but at 57" moving toward the corner there is 2" bump-out and then the wall continues 21" to the corner. Effectively, the last 21'' of this wall extends out 2' more than the first 57".
My challenge is working around the bump-out so I can install my corner base and wall cabinets. One option is to extend the 57" of wall out 2' and this will remove the bump-out issue and make for an easier install, but my kitchen becomes 2" more narrow along this wall.
Do I have another option? I'm wondering if I can modify ( cut ) the corner cabinets to fit in the corner of my wall as it now exist. Has this been done by any members? If so, is it a difficult modification?
If I understand correctly, that 21" is "further into the room" than the other 57", no?
It is possible to do a modification as you asked, and it's actually fairly simple to do on the base run - the wall run will be a little trickier.
Along the base, assemble your corner cabinet as per the instructions, then mark off on the frame and rails where you need to make your cuts - basically 2" in one direction and 21" in the other. Make the cuts, and voila - virtually instantaneous mod.
When you go to install the cabinet, you might want to add a piece of 1x or 2x to the 21" portion of the wall as a substitute for the cut rail, and another length under the remaining rail (16 or 28", depending on which corner cabinet you're using) to provide some support for the remaining rail - this is especialy critical if you have the 49" base, as you've cut away a fair amount of the rail which supports the drawer divider for the 21" drawer on the "outside" portion of that cabinet.
The process is the same for the wall cabinet, though it's a little more complicated because you also need to cut the rigid back portion of the cabinet, as well as the shelves that you'll be putting inside the cabinet.
Is the 2" critical to making your layout work? As a "simpler" alternative to all this cutting and modification, you might just want to go ahead and fill in that 2" along the 57" run of the wall. Or a little of both - modify the base and build out along the wall.
