Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

Hello to all you incredibly creative people! Like most first-time posters, I have to admit I've been lurking (and learning) on this site for the past few months, too shy to post. But, now my curiosity has turned into desperation!!

We're doing a major renovation (walls down etc) and working with an architect and a contractor. Hired the architect to manage the contractor. Turns out the architect needs much more managing. (One day I promise to post what I've learned from not being a DIYer) Anyway, I digress...

Has anyone ever tried making a blind high cabinet/pantry?? The basic idea I have is to build a 35"x24"x80 cabinet box, with only a 15" opening accessible. The other 18" would be in the corner, but visible. Not accessible however because a countertop meets it on the base and high cabinets abut at the top. I'd use the NexusYB 15"door for the opening and inside put half moon type shelves, top to bottom (check out Wood blind corner Lazy Susans). For the inaccessible panel, I'm not exactly sure what to do... build a cabinet wall the same depth as the door and cover it with a piece of cover panel??

Here's a few sites that have inspired me...

European Kitchen Center (make sure you look at the "internals" page)
Chelsea Fine Custom Kitchens

Am I living in a dream world?

If this is entirely impossible, then the other option is to just make that back corner a typical base corner cabinet with a counter top and wall cabinets above. Of course, the measurements are not typical. We have 34-15" and I really want to maximize the space. I'm thinking about modifying a 49" blind corner unit to be 42" wide and 21" deep and putting a 12" x24" base next to it to form the corner, leaving an 18" door. Is that possible?

I've attached a mock-up and I (as I'm sure is not surprising) I have a bunch of other alternate versions...

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

i'm super tired tonight so i might not be following everything you're saying... AND i can't open your file (great help i am tonight )

But, might i add to your list of options that you could do a blind corner below the countertop, run the counter, and then stack your cabinets on top of the counter. it's a way that you can better choose what's going on underneath (like if you wanted to use a lazy susan corner cab or something like that).

Just thinking out loud... gonna go crash.

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

I can't look at your file, but somewhere (probably in the archives) someone posted info about stacking three 49" corner cabinets to make a high corner pantry.
How to make best use of a 49" corner cabinet?
stacked 49 with fridge
more stacked 49
stacked 49" base cabinets

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

Thanks for these suggestions. I wish I knew why the file isn't opening!

We only have 34.5" so the 49" wouldn't work, unless it could be cut down to that? I'm currently thinking that buying a 30" wide high cabinet and not putting it all the way into the corner may be the best option??

Your file may open - I do not have the IKEA Planner on this computer.

While you could cut down 49" cabinets, using a 30" wide high cabinet would be a whole lot easier than trying to cut down a bunch of base cabinets and stacking them. I missed the size you needed when I responded last night (I was loaded on Benadryl due to a wasp sting ).

You'll need an extra cover panel to fill the space on the front of the cabinet that is not covered by the doors.

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

I completely agree that using a 30" high cabinet would be easier. Our only problem is that we only have 81.5 (maybe even 81.25) inches of clearance to the soffit above.

I've been searching the threads for the true height of the 80" high cabinet. The website says it's 79.5" I've also been searching for adjustments we could make to the height through the legs --

Do 2" legs exist? What are other alternatives for creating a base of 2" or less?

Short of figuring the base out, I think we're leaning towards stacking 3 cabinets:
1) 30 x 30
2) 30 x 30
3) 15 x 30

The next decision is on the doors.

1) Stack 3 18" wide doors and then use either 3 - 15" doors OR one continuous cover panel for the blind side? (The 3" overage would cover the gap from the wall so it would be mounted exactly at the corner of the cabinets)

2) Cut down 24" x 64 door to 18" on one side and use a 15" x 64 door on the other.

Any ideas welcome -- this is driving me nutty!

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

My gut feeling is that this won't work even if you do squeeze a high pantry in there, because the susan shelves will be hard to use as soon as they get above eye level.

I don't think that your method above will work, since you said you have a cabinet run coming in from the side. Won't it's countertop interfere with the doors if you stack them as you've shown? Maybe I'm not seeing it correctly.

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

I wanted to add that I just noticed that you were only planning to have a 12" wide base cabinet on the other side of the L - is this correct? If so, I think that you'll be losing far more space in the blind corner through the use of half susans and all that than you gain by having a 12" wide base. It'd make your life a lot easier to just do a 30" high pantry with a modified base to get it below the 80" height requirement. Then you could use all the normal doors and drawer systems and you'd have a HUGE amount of storage. Plus, then you'd have one long straight cabinet run instead of the stubby L at the end. I might be missing something else that is going on that wall, though!

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

We're not planning to use lazy susans. The total width of this unit (high or stacked) will be 30" and we'll have and 18" width door opening, so only 12" will be blind.

How's the weather in Ithaca? I always love it there this time of year.

Re: Blind Corner High Cabinet/ Pantry??

Whoops- I saw the link to the wood lazy susans in your first post and thought you were using those. I was reacting to the two triangular dead spaces that those inherently give you.

It's raining right now, but the flowers are sure pretty!
