Modified 12" to 9" Cabinets

My Kitchen style will be LILJESTAD Dark Brown. I need an 8" or a 9 " wide cabinet to finish out one of my walls. Has anyone modified 12" wall and base cabinet frames (such as this one, IKEA | Built-in kitchens | AKURUM/RATIONELL system | AKURUM | Base cabinet frame) into a 9" by cutting the top, botton and back? Then cutting the LILJESTAD cover panel to make a door out of it? Is this even possible? BTW, I thought about using the PERFEKT Shelf with 2 drawers (but without the shelfs and drawers) but it is almost 2 or 3 times more expensive. Do you think the door using the cover panels would look out of place? Thanks.

Re: Modified 12" to 9" Cabinets

The cover panel is too thin to use as a door (1/2" vs. 3/4")...you can't drill for the hinge...I would build an open shelving unit using cover panels.

Re: Modified 12" to 9" Cabinets

Thanks for your quick reply. This cabinet is between a fridge and a stove and I hate to have open shelves near steam/oil/water/grease and so forth. Would doubling up on the cover panels work? This would give me 1" door. Since there is not other cabinet on either side, the front/back distance would not matter.

As you can see, I am desperate to make this work. I even thought about cutting the 12" door by removing 3" strip from the middle and gluing it back together, but I know it would be hard to cover the seam.

Any suggestions on this fix would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Modified 12" to 9" Cabinets

The cover panel for the 49" blind corner cabinet is 27 x 30 3/8 x 3/4"...this would work to make a 9" door...you will need 35mm drill bit for the hinge holes (Freud makes these), and will need to finish the cut edge.

Hi- why not use a 12" door and cut it down?
Check out my Gallery. I just uploaded tonight. We cut down a 12" base cabinet & a 12" wall cabinet to make a cabinet that's almost 9" wide. Good luck. It can be done.

Re: Modified 12" to 9" Cabinets

Thank you for your reply and pictures. It helps a lot to know someone has done this. My door style is Adel MB, and when I picked up my kitchen this weekend, an Ikean told me that thier installers do this all the time. For my door style, they cut a strip from the middle and glue it back together. The important thing is to have a very sharp saw. Thanks again and I will post my final design once it is complete.
