Is 30" really 30"?
Is 30" really 30"?
I read in another thread that the 30" width cabinets and the 30" width doors are not both 30". Is this true?
Here's what I want to do:
I want to mod a 30x15x24 cab (birch carcass sold as frame only...no doors/hinges) to 30x8x24 and add pullout drawers using RATIONELL hardware and the drawer front from a 30" wide built-in cabinet which has an 8" height drawer at the bottom (special order).
Is the 30" cabinet width the same 30" as the drawer width?!
Also, is the grain of the 8" height Nexus birch door horizontal or vertical?

Re: Is 30" really 30"?
Quickly, "no". And what "30 inches" means depends on which 30" you're talking about.
An Akurum 30" x 30" wall (and 30" base) cabinet will actually measure 29 7/8" inches wide, and 30 3/8" high. Of course, there are no 30" wide doors, so you don't have to sweat that measurement.
If you are using parts sold by IKEA, you don't need to worry about the way the measurements vary - the components are sold to fit (and work with) each other. In other words, if you buy a 30" wide cabinet and the 2 doors or the drawers and fronts to go with that cabinet, they will fit and work just fine.
As for the NB, the grain on the doors and drawer fronts runs vertically (up and down, so as to avoid confusion), but there is no drawer front that measures 8" high. On the other hand, NB being what it is, this is just about the easiest door style to "custom make" your own sizes.

Okay. That clears everything up.
This is the cabinet I was referring to with the 8" height drawer. I have part numbers for special ordering of them.

Re: Is 30" really 30"?
The 30" drawers are about an eighth inch smaller than the cab. (for clearance depending on the style). I have never seen an 8" tall drawer. I have seen a 6"(<) 12"(<) and 11"(<)

6.25" - just a hair under that actual size, maybe in reality 6-1/8". But allow 6-1/4" for clearance.
