shelves in high pantry- need for support?

We are making one high pantry into a broom closet and the other will have the pullout. Both are 18" wide. The question is about the 2 shelves that come with the 80" high pantry. The top one is for support, but if we attach the 2nd one where they recommend, there won't be height for a broom closet. Can we not use the second shelf or just put it lower to brace the cabinet? it will be attached on one side to base and wall cabinets too. And with the pullout pantry, do we need the second shelf? there will be 2 pullouts that are attached, and the shelf will get in the way of accessing the items. If anyone has recommendations, we are ready to do this, after spending 2 weeks modifying the pantry depth to 22". Please respond! My husband and I have become dependent on Ikeafans for advice and direction!

thanks all of you brave builders!

Re: shelves in high pantry- need for support?

You can go ahead without that middle shelf. As you've figured out, you need the top shelf to define the upper space, but the 2nd one isn't needed.
