Pantry (High Cab) Modification Photos

Below are pics of our pantry cabinet modification. We cut a high cab from 88 to 84 inches to have a total height of 88 inches (including the feet) to aproximate the height of the fridge (a taller grill will be installed at the top of the fridge so there will be no gap).

From bottom to top, there is a 12.5 drawer, a 11.25 drawer, two 6.25 drawers, an 18-inch tall door, and a 39-inch tall door.

The 18 inch door is hinged with a lift-up stay hinge (Stratos, by Hafele) to hide the microwave.

The pantry cab is topped by an 18-inch tall cab with the lift up hinge that goes with horizontal cabs. All filler pieces were cut from Abstrakt cover panel and attached with brackets.

Re: Pantry (High Cab) Modification Photos

Thank you!

Here is a link to more pics:
Rubrik SS and Abstrakt progress photos

The doors are Rubrik stainless and Abstrakt white; counters are honed and acid-washed carrara (the acid washing makes them virtually impervious to staining and masks any etching if something acidic gets spilled).

Re the microwave cab: initially, instead of the 18 inch tall door, I had a 24 inch tall one, and inside the microwave sat on a shelf with an internal drawer underneath that was to hold microwaveable stuff like popcorn and soups, etc). But, when opened, the bottom of the door hung down too low and was completely in one's line of sight into the cubby - total rookie mistake, as I was not aware that the hinge would not pull the door up higher. So, we ended up swapping the 24 for an 18, and changing the former internal drawer into one with a regular front, and now it works very well. The configuration is essentially still the same; the only difference is that visually the door to the micro is less tall and there are 4 drawers visible from the outside instead of three.

I love having the 24 inch wide drawers. I was a little concerned about having so many drawers in a pantry but am finding it is much more space efficient than shelves. I still have plenty of room for taller items like cereal boxes, but substantially more useable / easily accessible room for smaller items. And it is nice to not have to dig through a 24 inch deep pantry for a can of tuna or whatnot (previously, there was a small closet with shelves to the left of the fridge that we ripped out).
