My idea for modifying my full-depth 24" pantry with shelves such that it can have a section for my broom, mop, etc., is to take back the shelves it uses and instead get some 18" x 24" shelves, leaving 6" for my cleaning tools. What should I use to divide that portion off? The best thing I've found so far is an Arlig 24" x 64" door for $22 that I could cut down and drill to place in and support the smaller shelves. The door, however, is only 5/8" thick. I'm not seeing anything that is the regular 3/4" construction, so I'm wondering if it would be strong enough to support the shelves. The only other option I could think of is to buy the smallest pantry frame I could ($70) and take a part from there, but would be much more expensive. I guess I could wade through the as-is section hoping for a find, as well.
Okay, checking prices...the Arlig door might be your cheapest bet. But I'd prefer to have everything match a bit when I opened the door to the pantry, and you'd have to drill all the holes for your shelves to match the pantry frame... kind of a pain!
One option might be to mount a normal base cabinet ($30 or so) inside your pantry...you could even stack two of them. Then you'd have all the predrilled holes, correct thicknesses, etc.
Or mount the brooms/mops on your door and cut all the shelves down? Lots of redrilling of holes, but definitely the cheapest option!
Not sure that mounting stuff on the door would work because I'm trying to keep the cleaning stuff in its own area because I'll probably be putting food on the shelves on the other side of the divider. I guess feel like I need a barrier between the two--keeping your food away from dirty brooms, mops, etc.
I'm not too concerned with it matching exactly since there will be a door over it. As long as it's some sort of white finish, I should be okay with it.
I'm not looking forward to drilling holes, but I guess I will do it if I have to. I think if I can find a piece from a pantry carcass in as-is, it would probably be the best bet, as the holes would be pre-drilled and I would just have to trim it on the top and bottom.
You have exactly the same idea as I do for my pantry, and I've been struggling with the same thing! (great minds think alike lol)
I was discussing it with one of the staff in my store, and they suggested buying a cover panel for the pantry, and cutting that down to fit - you won't need to buy a whole heap of extra stuff like you were thinking, but you would still need to drill holes tho, and then buy full length shelves to fit the pantry and cut them down to whatever width you want them, and customer service could give you extra shelf 'noggins' or whatever you call those little pegs that hold the shelf in place.
I was going to return the 24"x24" shelves I have and get the 18"x24" ones so that I wouldn't have to cut them down, so the only added expense would be the divider part. This dictates that the broom section will have to be 6", but I'm okay with that.
The white cover panel would be $63, as opposed to the white door for $22, and the door is 1/8" thicker, which I'd prefer. So, in essence, I would only be spending $22 (and I'd get back the $4 difference for returning the larger shelves).
Ooops, I forgot the Arlig was the one with the rounded corners! I guess it would be the Applad doors, which are square slab doors and it would be $45. Still, not too bad, if that's the worst-case scenario.
