What supports the weight of a double Domsjo sink on an Akurum sink base? Is it the countertop that the sink rim rests on, or is it the front metal bar that came with the sink? I am asking because I want to modify an Akurum sink base and would like to take out that front metal bar, because it’s in the way of a face frame I would like to mount on the front of the cabinet. I don't want to do this improperly and have the sink break at some point in the future because I didn’t support it properly.

I’d be able to reposition the front and rear metal brackets so that they run under the sink and support it that way.

I’d appreciate any thoughts you may have on this. Thanks.

I don't have an answer, but I"m curious about what you're doing. Are you setting up one of those cool farmhouse sink looks where it's open shelving below the sink? I've always loved that look and can't wait to see how it turns out if that's what you're doing.

We're not doing that. I'm actually trying to make the Akurum cabinet fit in with other cabinets we have. The inside of the Akurum looks like the inside of the Cabico, and so if I buy doors and a face frame (the strips of wood that surround the edge of the cabinet front), I hope to cover up the front of the Akurum so it looks like all the other cabinets. But that darn white piece of metal is in my way. If I could just take it out, then I can do this. I might do it anyway, and just let the chips fall where they may...

The metal bar is only to keep the sides of the cabinet from bowing outward. The weight of the sink is supported entirely by the sides of the cabinet via the countertop. If you attach a face frame to the front of the cabinet, you should accomplish the same thing, i.e. tying the cabinet sides together.

I assume if you've got framed Cabico cabinets elsewhere that you're going to use Cabico doors and hinges?

Susan

P.S. Welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the answer I was hoping to hear.

Yes, we got a great deal on Cabico cabinets and a granite countertop. Someone bought and installed these cabinets, decided he didn't like them, took them out and replaced them with a set of identical cabinets with a different finish.

I spoke with the Cabico folks and they said they would sell me a face frame and doors of any size I want. I don't know how much that will cost, but I do know that the whole sink base with the doors would cost around $550. My Akurum sink base cost $35.
