Post Double Domsjo sink for regular/non-IKEA sink base?

Has anyone installed the double domsjo sink in a kitchen with non-IKEA cabinets/sinkbase? I haven't taken measurements yet of the existing sinkbase, but its just your standard 1980s kitchen cabinets (which will be painted white). I'll also be installing the Pronomen countertops.

If this will be too much work to fit, I'll probably just go with a simple stainless steel sink.

Question Re: Double Domsjo sink for regular/non-IKEA sink base?

BUMP...I see nobody has responded to this question. This is the exact question my wife and I have. We bought the sink but we are not sure if its going to be a pain in the arse to install it with our 20yr old sink base. It would really stink to cut out the fake drawers of the sink base only to find out the sink will not fit for some reason. All the measurements add up and seem like it should work. Sorta scared cause once I cut the cabinets there is no turning back.

thanks everybody

Re: Double Domsjo sink for regular/non-IKEA sink base?

I'd think you could install the Domsjo in a regular 36" sink base. The IKEA 36" sink base is just their regular 36" base cabinet without the upper drawers. Included with the Domsjo sink is the bar that keeps the sides of the cabinet from spreading, but the sink itself is supported by the sides.

I'd download the Double Bowl Sink instructions and check the details, such as the notches that have to be made in the counter on each side.

We're still weeks out from installing our cabinets and Domsjo sink so I can't give any specifics, but I've been studying those installation instructions to be ready.

We are installing our double domsjo sink in a non/Ikea base cabinet this week. I will post some pictures and any helpful hints we have. Hope it will help!

I know, I know, it's been a week and still no photos. I always estimate incorrectly about how long it will take to finish things. We have to get our tile counter top installed before the sink. It might take a little while still, but I will definitely post all the information I can when we are done!!!

We just picked up our double Domsjo Sink on Friday. we are still a month or so away before trying to install it in our vintage cabinets.

But you mentioned having to the tile countertop first. We're thinking of doing Silestone quartz counter... does it matter which goes first? The sink or the counter? It seems like the sink has a lip that goes OVER the counter, so i guess the sink?

Re: Double Domsjo sink for regular/non-IKEA sink base?

It does matter which goes first - the double domsjo has a lip that sits on top of the countertop ... so... the countertop needs to be installed before the sink is installed. there is no cutout for the countertop - the countertop ends squarely at each side of the cabinet and needs to be notched out for the sink to fit properly.

Re: Double Domsjo sink for regular/non-IKEA sink base?

Well finally we have suceeded in installing our double sink in a non-Ikea sink cabinet. It really wasn't that hard. Definitely look at the tutorial here for great instructions. The bottom line for us was just putting it in and checking where it didn't fit, taking it out, fixing and trying again. I didn't think it was too burdensome to lift in and out. My husband and I managed just fine. We took off the false drawer fronts. Then we had to cut out about 8 1/4 inches at the back of the cabinet because the sink fits all the way up to the wall. We also cut out the bar that held the drawer fronts in. We had to cut about half of the wood out of the vertical pieces where the drawer fronts were. We only installed one bar of the two provided with the sink. We had put one in right behind the front horizontal frame, but the sink hit it. We removed it because we felt like that part of the frame was doing a good job bracing the cabinet. Once everything was modified to fit, we still have a small gap between the bottom of the sink and the frame that holds the doors on. It is hardly noticeable and well worth it! I really love my new sink!

I am working on posting some photos, hopefully I'll figure it out sooner, rather than later!

Please contact me with any questions I am more than happy to help!
