Post New use for Ikea Kitchen cabinets!

Why, is that an Akurum cabinet in the living room?

Why yes, it is! A 36x30 upper, with the new Rubrik doors. But what is it doing there, out of the kitchen??

Shoe storage! Of course!

When I saw those Rubrik doors, i knew i had to have them in our house. our kitchen was done, so I came up with this! We're still thinking about what to use as a countertop for it - i'm leaning towards an Abstrakt white cover panel, but i haven't bought it yet, in case something better presents itself.

That looks AMAZING, Emily! I think I'm going to steal that idea and put a row of 3 cabinets in the dining room for CD storage (I don't care about not being able to easily access the ones in the back)...I don't know why it never occured to me that I could add extra shelves, duh!

I'm already envisioning a wood countertop on it, stained to match my floors.

LOVE those RUBRIK doors!

That's great! Really very nice use of space! I'd love to post your photo over on the Fansite side! Is that ok with you?

Anna -- if you use a little "stairstep" thing on your shelf, you'll have access to the front and the back (top)as well. You'll lose space at the back on the bottom, but you'll be able to access all your CD's. As if that makes any sense.

Emily, that looks incredible! We need something similar, so I may just have to steal that idea from you.

Susan, you certainly can post the photo wherever you like on the site! I'm glad my idea is helping other people out, too. It is a pricier option than many other shoe storage options, but the look is so great, and it really does store a lot of shoes.

One word of caution, though - my husband wears size 11/12 shoes, and they are just a touch too long to be put straight in the cabinet - but by tilting them slightly, we can still get the doors closed. So if anyone in your household has gigantic feet, this may not be the best option.

Using the same thing for CD storage sounds like a great idea, Anna. Steal away!

How translucent are the doors, Emily? In your photo it looks like they're pretty opaque--I can't see the shoes at all through the glass.

I've seen them in the display at IKEA, but I couldn't really get a sense of what they look like in the real world filled with multi-colored items.

Anna, you can't see a thing through them. It may be a different story if one were to put a light in the cabinet, but as is, they are completely opaque. Which makes them a great option for kitchen cabinets that would have a ton of cluttery things in them, too.

Fantastic! The style looks like it goes perfectly with your house.

I must be on the same wavelength, because I recently used a Hallarum 24" base cabinet in my bedroom for shoe storage. I'm still working on installing the slide-out shelves, but I'm thinking I can get 2 rows of shoes per shelf. Now I want to do one in the hallway too!

Kathy, we must indeed be on the same wavelength - I'm about to post pictures of our Hallarum kitchen!
