I've been blogged!
Post

I have a 36" Whitehaus fireclay farm sink that I want to install in a 36" Akurum sink base. (I ordered the Domsjo sink base, but they sent me home with the regular sink base. And frankly, I'm just too beat with a zillion trips to IKEA to exchange it, so I'd like to make this one work.)

I'm going to need some kind of support underneath the sink, but I'm just not sure the best way to go about this.

(I think I've asked this question before too, but I can't seem to find it. Maybe it was over on THS. I don't know. Kinda running out of steam here.)

Anyway, has anyone installed an undermount farm sink? Can you give me some instructions or tips? I'd really like to see a photo. Even a photo of the underside/inside of the cabinet and supports from a modified rangetop cabinet would do.

FWIW , if it's not already out there somewhere, I plan to photograph and takenotes of our install so that it may be added (ifSusan wants it) to the FAQs .

Thanks!

OF COURSE I WANT TO!!! I've been behind on getting new stuff up lately, but I swear I'm going to get all of it up eventually!

I wish I had some of the details of pickles_ca's install. Have you tried PMing her? She's a member here, and installed a small apron front sink, although as I recall hers gave her trouble as it was not level -- the sink, not the install.

For support, I would suggest some 2x4's installed along the walls, with possibly a shelf above to sit the sink on. You'll need to get crafty to allow for all the plumbing. Also, you'll not install the cross brace on the front of the cabinet, but you'll need to tie the two sides together in some fashion -- this is usually accomplished with a metal bar that is provided with the Domsjo setup. Perhaps a metal/wooden crossbrace at the top of the door level? Hopefully someone with a little more engineering smarts than I will come along.

As for the regular sink base vs. Domsjo....just don't open the faux sink front(s) and the bag with the hardware for it (white powder coated parts -- one big "triangle", 2 L-brackets). When you're all done, you can return those parts. Hope that helps!

Susan
