Well, there are the
towers, but then you lose the horizontal space because they're so narrow you'd need a lot of them, and that would be expensive, too.
While not an Ikea solution, if you check around there are a lot of places where you can get wider shelves for media. homedecorators.com is one place, and if you google for "media shelves" you'll find a lot more. I completely know what you mean--it's irked me for years that most bookcases are definitely designed with the idea that people will put almost anything except books on them.
Just an observation -- HARDCOVER books need shelves that are a bit deeper than paperbacks, and oversized hardcovers take even more depth. So Billys are perfect for those, if not for standard paperbacks.
I'd have to disagree a little, SherryLibrarian. I have an awful lot of hardcover books that fit just fine on my 8-3/4 deep shelves. Yes, a few, like coffee table type books, need deeper ones, but the average bookshelf today is more intended for tchotchke display than for book storage. How many standard hardcover books are 11 inches deep or more?
I think that's why the quality of BILLY has
gone down so much in the last 10 years.
They're fine for a few books and some vases,
but not for an old set of encyclopedias.
They don't even put stacks of hardcovers
on the wide BILLY display units anymore
because it made the shelves sag too much.
