Here are some photos of the raised dishwasher cabinet DH has built. It's raised up about a foot to make for easier loading/unloading. It starts with 1 24" base cabinet, cut down to about 8" tall. One of the cut off sides is flipped over to make the top of the cabinet, while the other cut off side is cut again to make an extension on the adjoining cabinet. A couple of melamine shelves were used for the top of the dishwasher opening.

There will be a usable drawer under the dishwasher.

Here's a closeup of the shortened 24" cabinet sitting next to the adjoining unit.

Here's a closeup of the left side of the dishwasher opening, showing where the side of the adjoining cabinet was extended to cover the side of the dishwasher.

That looks great! I love the raised idea and the drawer beneath. I can't wait to see it done. Thanks for sharing!

Liz -- I must have been napping -- I totally missed this! That is so cool -- thanks for posting the pics. You and your hubby are so handy! I'd love to make up a tutorial for this with your pics if that's ok by you. Let me know what you think!

That is very cool. It'll make it easier to unload the dishes and provide some handy storage at the same time. How are you planning to handle the different countertop heights? Make it a little island/landing area?

Neat idea...

James

Stacylu, it's been 15 years since I first saw a raised dishwasher. It's been on my "gotta have it" list ever since.

Susan, of course you can use it. After all I've learned here, it's nice to be able to add a bit.

James, the dishwasher is on a 4' half wall between the kitchen and living room. In the first couple of pics, you can just see the sheetrock for this half wall. It's at the same height as the dishwasher. Hopefully this will hide some of the kitchen mess. The half wall will have a 12" counter extending towards the living room, which wil be topped with the same material as the kitchen counters.

I echo: very cool!Usually I don't like the wayraised dw 's look becausethey mess up the counter run. (even though they seem like they'd be very convenient) I love the way you've worked it inso that its integrated with the raised bar; very clever.

Love it! I've always loved the idea of a raised dishwasher and have resisted putting one in because a) this is the first kitchen I've remodeled and b) I didn't want to have the mismatched counters either.

Cool!!!

I am very glad to see this modification going full speed. Weare also discussing the raising of the washer and dryer...bending over to clean up anything hurts my back double!!

My kitchen plan (not yet posted) is very similiar with a half wall. I like the idea of hiding mess. Now I will have to see if the sink with the drainboard is available with the drainboard on the other side, since the original idea had the drainboard over the dishwasher.

Great idea!!

Liz, do you have the dishwasher installed yet? Also, what is going (or is now) in the cabinet between the sink base and the dishwasher? If you are now using the sink and dishwasher what is your experience with having a cabinet between the sink and the dishwasher? Most raised dishwashers do not have a functioning drawer below the dishwasher. How is yours working out? Do you have a problem with the dishwasher vibrating the drawer?

Sorry for all the questions. I amnow reconfiguring my kitchen. I am considering raising the dishwasher due to having surgery on both knees + my recent purchase of a tall tub dishwasher = I can't readily reach things on the bottom rack. Even though this means my counters will look totallly goofy my comfort comes first.

Liz,

I just stumbled across this and am thinking it's a terrific idea. Like Shouva, I'm curious as to how things have 'panned out'. I wish I could incorporate this into our next kitchen, but with only the DW between the stove and sink, I will need the counter at the regular height.
