last year I bought a wardrobe for $40 on clearance at ikea, I'm pretty sure they discontinued it and I can't remember the name of it but it's just a big ol box....

23"deep
30"wide
nearly 70" tall

with one shelf and one rod

I have ALL my clothes in it and it's just an impossible mess..as you can see in the picture. I need to modify it to be condusive to organization.
I think i need something with shelves that can just sit inside it, because i'm afraid that it'll get too beat up/won't hold up if i try to nail shelves in -(it's probably the lowest grade of all ikea products)...ideas??

maybe i should just invest in a new shelved one, but $40 is hard to beat.

EDIT:

sorry i can't get the picture to show up.
here's the link to it on my blog

For some reason, the picture's not showing up for me, so I can't give too specific of suggestions. But I have seen (not sure if Ikea has anything, but I've seen them elsewhere) second rods that can be suspended from the upper rod, so you could have more hanging space for short stuff like shirts. Actually, if you're handy, I don't know why you couldn't make your own version -- just cut off a wooden rod to the length you want (could be shorter than the upper rod, so you'd still have space for long hanging clothes) and use chains or wire to suspend it from the upper rod.

I can't see the photo either, but do the interior fittings for the PAX system fit in Ikea's other wardrobes? There are so many options there, that you might not have to modify anything.

To see your picture, I have to right-click on it, select properties and then cut and paste the URL of your picture into my browser. See the picture in my browser and then hit my back arrow and I can see it in your post.

Anywho, I think that most of the interior fittings for the Pax stuff are for 34" wide or 19" wide so I think you might not make it there.

I think the more important question is what, exactly, are you going to store in there? Is this your primary closet? Do you have mostly folded items or hanging things?

Maybe you could put a unit like one of the Antonius drawer units in there?

If you mostly need space for folded stuff and not hanging stuff - it doesn't look like you have anything hanging there now - I think I would ditch the rod and find a way to use the Antonius or add shelves.

I put a similar Antonius unit in my 30" wide kitchen cabinet (in the bedroom, though). I love it! It's 40" high, 19+ wide and has 6 fabric drawers - makes a great use of space if you don't need lots of hanging space. I've got 10" on the side that I am still trying to figure out how to use, but I do love all those extra drawers!

40" high hm? that may just work...the drawers would be handy since it's so deep.

I do need mostly folding space...I just have lots and lots of knitwear.

thanks for your input/ideas guys...helpful as always!

I've been blogged!

If you are going to put a lot of knits in the wire storage be prepared for "gridline" fever! Put a piece of cardboard or something nicer in the bottom to keep your clothes from getting these creases (that really are hard to remove without re-washing them).

The Antonius fabric drawers would avoid that grid problem. They're even washable, I think.

Yep, that's it. Seattle had the 40" tall unit on sale for $30, so I decided to give it a try, and am glad I did. Now I just have to make decisions about what to put in all those drawers.
