I need some measurements, please

I wanted to put a 21" wide face frame from an older non-Ikea cabinet on a new 21" wide Akurum base. I bought the base cabinet with pull-out wire baskets and with a drawer. I drove the three hours to get home, and now I realize I messed up. Ikea cabinets don't have face frames and so they can have wider pull out wire baskets and drawers than one could in a cabinet that does have a face frame.

Sure enough, my wire baskets are a touch wider than the opening of my face frame. I don't want to open the drawer package to measure the width of it, so was hoping that someone with a 21" cabinet with a drawer in it, would kindly open the drawer and measure the width of the sides- not the width of the drawer front, but the widest part behind the drawer front.

I have 18.25 inches inside the opening of my face frame.

My next question is, do you think that I could buy wire baskets and a drawer from an 18" wide cabinet and mount them inside my 21" cabinet, using 1.5" spacers on the two sides? I would assume this would work fine, but wanted opinions on whether that would really work. I don't want to overlook something again.

Finally, does anyone know if it's possible for me to a) return the drawer and pull-out wire basket parts, while keeping the base cabinet, and b) buying 18" wide drawer and wire basket parts, without having to buy the 18" cabinet they normally fit into?

Thanks!

Hi jh376! Welcome to the forums.

To answer your last question first, yes. You can return whichever parts and pieces you don't need -- most everything is sold on a component basis, so there's no trouble picking and choosing only what you need/want. You could buy a 12" door, 2 24" drawers, 30" drawer fronts and a 15" cabinet and noone would look sideways.

As for your cabinet...I'm a little confused. You've got a non-IKEA face frame -- do you mean the door or an actual face frame? that you're putting on a new IKEA Akurum 21" frameless cabinet. You bought wire baskets (to put behind the door, I assume) and a drawer (on the top). Maybe it doesn't matter that I don't get it. What you need to know is that the 21" cabinet is 19.5" on the inside, and the drawers are about 1/4" shy of that. The wire baskets are significantly narrower than the drawers because they are mounted out a bit.

Check this page for some specific measurements. Hope that helps!

Susan

The actual width of a 21" drawer (not the front) is 19", while the total size of the cabinet "opening" is 19 7/16", as measured on my own cabinets.
