Hi all.Â* My
DH
and I are building a timberframe home.Â* I am thinking of going with the Fagerland cabinets b/c I like the simple more country style.Â* But I want to paint them.Â* I DON"T want to sand them though!!Â* Is there a product out there that I can prime them with and then paint?I was thinking of buying one door and testing how to paint it . . ..Â*-Dana
DH definition
DH usually means Dear Husband (or, pick your own adjective starting with D).
Pickles_ca painted their fagerland island red and it looks great! Maybe they will chime in with the details, I couldn't find anything when I searched. I'm guessing that some sort of sanding will be necessary, but you might be able to take all the doors and side panels to a refinishing shop where they can do it all at once for cheap. Having chairs stripped isn't TOO expensive, I can only imagine that flat things like doors would be even easier and cheaper. I'm going for Fagerland as well (whenever we actually get started) and was not planning on painting it, but there is going to be a shallow pantry wall where I've been considering doing some sort of stain or glaze. I'd love to hear and see what you come up with!
Hey Dana! Good to see you again. I thought we'd lost you to HD or Lowes (aghast !).
Pickles said it was really very easy -- she just gave the doors a light sanding, primed and painted. If you're not into sanding at all, you could try a product called "Liquid Sander".We picked some up for a project a while back--worked ok, but not for my purposes. (I simply wanted to dull a shiny finish, not prep for painting)
Taking it to a shop would certainly be easiest, of course. Perhaps if you're going to that extent, (and it's in the budget of course!) you could price out having them painted?
As Susan said, Liquid sander would probably work fine for you. It etches the surface so later paint/finish coats get good adhesion. It didn't work out for us as we were trying to use it to dull a gloss surface and it left an uneven appearance, as a surface prep for later painting (it's intended use)it should work beautifully.

Susan! HD or Lowes?? Please! Never!! Why would I do that when I can have style and taste for such a bargain?? Nah - we have just been busy bees here. Our twins turned 1 on December 10th. Big family celebration! They didn't know what all the fuss was about!
Thank you James - I will most definately look into this Liquid Sander product. That is exactly what I was hoping existed in this world!
We have also been busy finalizing all the plans for the house so that we can break ground in the New Year! After we pay our town a whopping building permit fee. Merry Christmas to us. waa! No $$ for gifts this year!
sigh.
If I do not get back on before the holidays - happiest of holidays in whatever way you celebrate to you and yours!!
Ah, Dana, I'm hoping you had a nice winter holiday anyway. We are skipping Easter in a similar fashion, no baskets for us, or trips, until we get a handle on this place.
I wish you lots of energy for building, having once-upon-a-time spent my energy & then some on a build, staining 2500 board feet of cedar siding, BOTH sides btw, cleaning up masses of rubble on a seemed like daily hopeless endeavor to keep up, screwing 1900 sq ft of underlayment to deck, etc etc etc . . . . Did little skinny me really do that?
Anyway, I saw your Fagerland cabinet painting plan here just as I was sliding over from Duvbo into the land of paint modding. I'm deciding to paint because there's no door style in stock at my Schaumburg store that I like as much as not-in-stock Duvbo. I'm buying the cabs a section at a time, which means several orders & opportunities for aggravation if I don't just keep that end simple.
I hope Pickles is around to hear that she inspires us.
Here's my plan so far, thanks to all you who have gone before me: use liquid sander, prime with undecided product, top coat(s) Cabinet Coat paint, then maybe Ralph Lauren glaze like teastain for aging. I've checked out bin pulls at Lee Valley & they are sweet & affordable. Am I missing anything? Is there a best primer anyone has used?
First section is my sink unit, which will have to be done the day of the flooring, coming up when my family is available in May. No bathtub dish-doing for me!
My daughter took pix of my horrible current kitchen-like area, she will post them on this site in B&A when she gets back from Florida - ah yes, she is not yet remodeling or building anything - (moment of jealous sigh)
