I am in awe of the broom closets shown in a couple of threads here and currently have one in my plan. However, after re-evaluating my storage, I may try to repurpose that space to better suit my needs (read: modify a modification). Is there any reason that the broom closet concept can't be expanded to allow for a pullout pantry that is only wide enough for a single row of canned goods? I don't have 12" of space for a tall pullout, but I can get 6 or maybe 7 inches into my plan.
I'd likely set it up like stacylu's, with a solid back and the cans stacked on some sort of shelves that are only accessible from one side rather than IKEA's concept with wire shelves. Outside of cutting shelves and supporting them to hold the weight of a dozen canned goods, I don't think this should be too big a problem. Obviously I'd have to have a support for the front of the cans as well so they wouldn't fall forward. There may even be an after-market product that would just screw into the piece of ply that I'd use as the backerboard...
Slithy, i don't know if you've seen the 153 degree hinges that allow you to open a pantry door completely and pull out drawers. we're no longer limited to pull out pantries or wire baskets. i hate the wire baskets... you'll find that i'm a big proponent of the pantry with drawers
Just a thought, though i know you are talking about something entirely different
welcome to the forum! And i'll say it now since it's going to be said: pictures are always enjoyed and encouraged

I wonder if you could stack a few of the Rev a Shelf 6" fillers. I'm thinking of using the 6.25 x 29.34 oven cabinet door turned sideways as the pullout door.

I've seen in the past at Lowe's and Home Depot a tall white wire unit that is made to mount onto a door to act as a thin pantry. I don't know if it is still available but if it is you could mount one of these onto a cover panel, plywood or other sturdy surface that would not torque. This could then be mounted onto runners on it's back or top and bottom to make the unit into a pullout. It would be a lot easier to do than making several thin shelves with lips all around, the lips would be thick too, which takes up valuable space. The wire is thin.
You would have to build a cabinet to hold the entire thing. There are postings of modifications here that show making the tall "broom closet" you mentioned.
