I've spent hours shopping for the perfect dog food bin to go in my base 12" pullout, and can't find one! Can anyone help me stop this craziness? The ideal one would be about a 30 quart container with a tight lid, or the dogs will learn to open the door and do self-service feeding. It's pretty easy to find one that fits at the bottom (about 7.5" max at base and 8.5" at the little side rod). It's the width at the top that trips me up - it can be no wider than 10.25". Height: up to 16.5", unless it's perfect in other ways, in which case I'd remove one of the drawers.

Thanks for any clues you can offer!

Kathy

Do you need it to have a lid? If not, try an office size rectangular trash bin, I think they are 10 gallons? Maybe 13 gallons? They should fit fine.

You're right about those office waste baskets - they fit perfectly in the 12". But this one needs to have a lid.

By the way, I found a new spice drawer insert that works really well in the 12" pullout drawers. It's the kind that zig zags so that the bottles sit on an incline and don't slide around. You can get 4 rows of 4 or 5 jars. These are plastic you can trim to size - the set I got are 9.5 x 20.5" and I trimmed about 1/2". The brand is Made Smart - Expandable Drawer Liner, product # 68111. I found them at "The Container Store" for 6.95 for a set of 2.

The bigger IKEA trash can fits in the 12" pullout (with room behind for other odds and ends) and has a lid and metal handle. But of course, I doubt it's 30 qts. :?

hi kmcg

Not sure if you've found your bin yet...

I bought mine in the pet section of Target for $9.99. It's white plastic with a sage green lid that is hinged, has a latch, and seals tight. I measured mine: base is 6-1/2 wide x 11 deep. Top is 9-3/4 by 18 deep. It is about 20-1/2 high, so a little taller than you wanted. I'm not sure how many quarts it holds, since the lable doesn't say (just says it canhold up to 25 pounds of food). I can fit the big 18 pound bag of cat food in it easily. They have three sizes of these containers- this is the middle size.

Hope this helps

Hi Jellybean - thanks for this. It sounds almost perfect! I can always move one of the drawers if this is the one for me. I looked through every bin at Target, but of course forgot the pet section - oops!

Thanks Stacy! I actually bought the Target one that Jellybean posted. It's good for the 12", though slightly small. So my yearning for total efficiency keeps tugging at me. I got another one (much like those you pictured) that is just a bit too big for the 12", but would be perfect for the 15". So I am trying to decide whether to devote the bottom shelf of a 15" pantry to dogfood.

Of course to do this, I would have to remove the pantry door and relocate the second drawer from the bottom. This seems a little silly, so I haven't done it yet. Net result: 2 new and empty dogfood bins sitting in the corner, 2 old and empty dogfood bins sitting across the room, and a big bag of dogfood sitting in front of them. (sometimes I like to "test" my family and see if anyone else will EVER be driven to put something away or fix something. So far, no luck on this dog food bag. But that's nothing compared to the piece of scotch tape that has been stuck on the kitchen ceiling for at least 4 years. I keep thinking I'll take it down, but then I can't resist continuing with my little experiment, and there it sticks.)

Whoa, how's that for an answer? I didn't mean to rant, but hopefully someone will see the humor in this!

Kathy --

I find it funny and yet familiar. And therefore, NOT FUNNY.

How's that?

Darn, I was hoping one of those would work... I'm looking for a decent bird food holder now for us.

And I DO see the un-humorous side of your rant as well. And a funny side story, when I sold my house in Texas to move back to WA, the 3 year old piece of tape from my housewarming party was still hanging up in the foyer!
