Post Varde folding lift door hinges

I'm trying to find out a bit about the hinges used in the Glass-Door Cabinet - the one with the double doors that overlaps as you lift it open (IKEA calls it folding, but that isn't really correct and gives people entirely the wrong idea about what sort of hinge mechanism it uses).

Is it possible to aquire just the hinges from IKEA? Or does anybody know a proper description of them so I can find something similar (or even better know where to get them)?

I really like the height and mechanism, but unfortunately the cabinet is about 8" too wide for my design, so I'm looking into the possibility of getting custom doors made up, but so far I've only been able to find the traditional lift and folding hinge mechanisms.

Thanks.

Colin

Welcome to the forums!

No, you can't buy the hinges separately. However. There's nothing that says you can't buy the cabinet as a whole (door, hinges, carcass), pick it up, walk out through the out door, in through the in door and return the cabinet box and door, keeping the hinge for yourself.

The hinges are made by Ferarri. Yep, Ferarri. Vroom. I don't know how you'd go about sourcing them elsewhere, although I do know that they are used on some of the pricey Euro cabinet brands. Then again, you don't really have to source them elsewhere, you just have to have some fortitude. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I think this is it: http://www.ferrarispa.it/eng/klokeng.html

That should make it easier to find. I'm trying to avoid doing anything actually felonious to get them, but I have considered just calling up IKEA to see if I can buy "spares" (they've always been good about parts for other products).

Oh, no...perhaps I didn't explain carefully enough. With IKEA, you pay for everything separately. (I think this applies to the horizontal lift hinges as well, but I could be wrong.) So, you buy 1 door, 1 carcass, 1 set of hinges. Each separate prices. Then you return 1 door, 1 carcass. You get your money back for those items, and IKEA gets to keep them. IKEA keeps your money for the hinges, and you get to keep them. So you haven't done anything wrong, just slightly out of line with their stated policy. I would never suggest you do anything felonious, or even misdemeanorish.

I knew about the doors/fronts being priced separately, but I just assumed that the hinges, etc. would be included with the doors since they're kind of useless without each other.

Apparently I normally hang out in much seedier areas of the web where it probably isn't a great idea to blindly trust everything you read...

Thanks.

Actually, Susan, with the corner cab, the hinges are inside the corner cab carcasss box, not as aseparate item like they are with the regular cabs. So I suspect that "fancy schmancy" hinges and hardware are more tightly regulated.

No problem, Colin. I just didn't want you to think I was advocating the ripping off of IKEA. That would raise prices for everyone. That would be bad.

Lisa -- Ah...so the corner cab hinges are not sold individually. Wonder about the horizontal lift hinges...?

Anyone who's got one - do you still have a draft order handy? Are they listed separately?

The support arms for the horizontal cabinets are included with the cabinet - they are not available seperately. If the returns/recovery dept. at your local IKEA is pro-active, they will have these items available for exchange (warranty issues) and will sometimes sell them outright - but I think this varies from store to store. The same issue applies to the door hinges for base and wall corner cabinets - they are only available with the cabinet. On the subject of horizontal cabinets: has anyone ever received a decent explanation as to why there are no birch horizontal cabinets (other than Varde)?

thanks for the clarification, Torrus. No, I've never figured that one out. You have any ideas?

just a fyi torrus is correct on the horizontal hinge that holds the door up not the integral hinge that holds the door to the cabinet is included with the frame of the horizontal cabinets. same goes with the frames of both base and upper corner cabinets the 37x37 cabinet and the 25x30 and the 25x39 corner cabinet. The blind corner cabinet will still need a hinge for he 21x24 or 21x30 door, just the norman integral hinge.

When purchasing the horizontal youll need the frame which comes with the ferarri hinge to hold up the door in the open position, the frame will also come with a glass shelf that cannot be bought sepratly either, a integral hinge, and the door of choice (the one exception is a avsikt glass door which has its own hinge connected to the door already.)

Like torrus also said correctly each store might or might not have extra ferrari hinges for missing or damaged claims.

Lastly the the reason why there are no birch frames in horizontal is pretty simple answer. When horizontal cabinets first came out they were sent over to the US as a test product to see if people would like to purchase them for their kitchens. so they just made the two frame sizes in white to test the waters. Now that people do like them you would think that they would make the birch color after being out for a couple of years but alas IKEA is a slow moving company in terms of getting things done especially for kitchens. so maybe one day it will be out but dont bet on it I havent heard of any news on that horizon.

hope this helps everyone
