Cutting Lack shelf down to 8" deep.

Can you cut down Lack Shelving unit to 8" deep (same length)? They are 10 1/4 and I don't have space for that in my hallway. I see a lot of posts about shortening them but nothing about cutting them lengthwise. I understand that I'll have to cut the metal rods that go inside the shelf but how does it look like inside the shelf? Has any one attempt this? Is it easy?

Re: Cutting Lack shelf down to 8" deep.

As with cutting the length of the Lack shelf, you are going to run into issues with the dreaded honeycomb material - there is solid build up only along the perimeter of the shelf. Also, the back edge of the shelf is designed to allow the bracket to "disappear" into the shelf - it is recessed a bit - so you'll have to replicate that for this to work out properly.

The question of whether this is easy to do is a relative one, depending on your levels of skill and comfort with tools, as well as the tools you have available to do this.

I read an Expedit reduction hack were it said that you have to salvage the ends and put it back in. I guess it's the same here. I just wondered if anyone has attempt it with a successful result.
