Will I be able to use this cabinet OK before the door is installed? Will I need to add temporary drawer fronts?

Can I adjust drawer placement on the inside, just like other IKEA cabs?

In case you're curious, we'll be using custom doors eventually, but I'd like to add 2 of these cabinets now.

You can use the drawers inside the cabinet before the door goes on, but you will probably want to put on temporary fronts - otherwise, there's nothing to keep the drawer contents from sliding off the front. Of course, you could try and be careful, but just in case, I'd go with the temporary fronts.

Two deep drawers have to go in specific locations - the bottom one, which goes in the second hole up, and another which goes in the 40th hole from the top. These line up with the mounting hardware that you'll install once the door arrives. (The instructions and template come with deep drawer fronts - be sure to hold onto those!)

The other drawers can go anywhere you want, and how you arrange them any way you want - you aren't limited to a specific deep/shallow mix (other than the 2 deeps, as above), even though the unit is sold with 2 deep and 3 shallow drawers. And FWIW , the top deep drawer usually is #2 from the top, but, again, it doesn't have to be #2.

Is the mounting hardware sold separately from the door itself? We'll be making our own doors.

Amazingly enough, we've been using most of our IKEA drawers without fronts for a few years now without a problem. The self-closing action really is that smooth. Somewhere on the site there are pics of my kitchen with the drawers installed. These were in a forum thread, not a gallery, as far as I remember.

Most of the mounting hardware you need for the drawers comes with the drawer body, though there is some hardware that comes with the internal deep drawer fronts that is used for those fronts.

Liz - I took a look at your pictures, and can't believe you've gone like that so long. I'd constantly be picking up crap from the floor if I tried this, and I live alone. Or used to.
