Greetings - my cabinets are being installed as I type and we've run into one small snag w/my tall pantry cabinet.
I purchased the 153 degree hinges so I could have the pull-out shelves, and my intention was to have the handle on the left, so the door opens out and to the right, which means the door would be parallel with my end wall...wellllllll there's not enough room because I have the garage door there, so the installer says we have to put the door so it opens out to the left. This means when I open the pantry, it'll be on the left and I'll be between the wall and that door, to get to the stuff...
Not a huge deal, but does anyone have any ideas on how I can make it work? there's not a spare inch to use, so we can't move the whole thing to the left to give me anymore wiggle room on the right for the door.
YIKES!
He's going to do that door last, just to see if we can come up w/anything else, but I think I'm going to be stuck!
lauren, is it your pull that is messing with the garage? if so you could use a different pull in that area that is either flat or recessed... i know it's not the most ideal solution, but might save you the bigger headache of the door opening the "wrong" way
Apparently it's the whole door and the pull....I guess since the right side of the pantry is basically flush w/the wall that has the garage door on it, it won't be able to open wide enough to let the stuff come out? I'll ask to be sure though, because I would rather it open to the right!
the 153 opens flush, it sort of opens in a way that pulls from the cabinet towards you and then out flush... it's hard to explain. does the garage stick out?
can you take a picture? i've got a couple of the pantries set up that way in very tight spots... including the left opening thing, and the door pulls out in a way that i have almost full access from the side (other side is against the wall) MUCH more access than a pull out, for the record
Here's a pic of the pantry in question, with the offending wall and door to the garage!
Pics for clarification
As you can see, the right side of the tall pantry is basically flush w/the wall that separates kitchen from garage. The brown door you see on the right of the white pantry is the one that leads to the garage.
This seems to be the problem. With that door (and its trim) there, the installer says I can't have the door hinges for the pantry on the right, because the door won't open right and the shelves won't slide.
Here's another pic:

In this one, you can see the garage door is slightly open (so you could tell what was what).
I'm leaving for work now, so hopefully one of ya'll brilliant people will figure out a way to put the hinges on the right of the pantry so the door opens against that wall!
You'd be a good candidate for a pull-out pantry instead of a hinged door, unless the hinges of your garage door stick out so far that when you pulled out the whole door it would stop at the garage hinges.
Any thoughts on that idea?

ahhhhhhh all very good ideas! I could probably turn the door around so it opens into the garage, thus putting the hinges on that side; however, my guy said if that's the case, if someone could get into my garage, all they'd have to do is pop the hinge pins off and BAM they'd be in my casa!
I really REALLY don't want the pullout pantry, I really want the shelves...I was ok w/the baskets, then I saw the shelves, and now it's that or nothing, I think...dang, I"m stubborn!
I'd love to see the 'tight quarters' pictures before my guy and I decide for sure....thanks!
Your guy obviously doesn't know about NRP'd hinges. That stands for Non Removable Pin. Basically there is a small pin that can only be removed w/a very very very tiny hex on the inside of hinge that you can only get to when the door is open so that you can't remove the big pin that holds the hinge together, thus not being able to remove the door.
We got those for two of our doors that swing open and the hinge needed to be on the outside. I had to have then "nerped" (the way it sounds) and it cost extra, but a good hardware store (not a big box), should be able to help you. If not a hardware store a door store.
There is a solution and you will have your pantry.
Something else to think about, though. Even thought the hinges will be on the outside you still have trim around the door on the inside. Will that get in the way of your pantry door?
