I was browsing the German Ikea inspiration photos and found a tall cabinet modification that i loved. It is the red abstrakt kitchen with a tall, what appears to be the oven cab, done out with glass doors. Anyone know how to do this. I have so many questions and one day soon I will sit down and put them all into one post. We are at the re-wiring stage right now but I'm hoping to order the majority of the cabs before April 1st in order to take advantage of the $100 gift certificate promo. Thx T
I think it is not an oven cabinet modification but three wall cabinets installed on top of each other in three columns. These are 60cm wide 70cm tall cabinets that are 37cm deep. These would translate into 24" wide 27.5"high 14.5" deep. You can use a similar wall cabinet in US sizes.
My Ikea has a very similar cabinet on display. From what I can tell, they used the floor standing version of the wall cabinet for the lower row and then mounted the next two rows to the wall with the mounting strip. The cabinets were not screwed to the one below them.
Tumbilli, welcome to the forum! changing out doors is pretty easy, you just have to do the math glass doors come in various sizes, but not all sizes so that is all you need to take into consideration.
i recently did an 88" tall pantry (30" wide) for my mom with 2 deep drawers on the bottom and then 2 sets of 30" tall glass doors on the top, my math didn't completely add up so i ripped a small drawerfront down and now she has a VERY shallow drawer for her teas and such
You just combine whatever sizes you want to combine and then tweak with the math. i don't know the picture you're talking about, if you want us to deconstruct it specifically you might want to link the picture here
And again, welcome!
ps, here's a pic to give you an idea what i'm talking about. it's the cabinet with the glass doors on the deep left
You guys are amazing. I find all the possibilities very confusing and find I'm limiting my creativity to the Ikea sizes available. I'll have to go out to Ikea, sit down with pen and paper and look at all a little differently. Here is the link to th German site. It's in the inspiration section which doesn't allow you to copy paste. IKEA | Lass dich inspirieren!
Basically what I would like is a 36" wide 24" deep tall cabinet (no greater than 85" high with feet) that had 3 drawers at the bottom and then glass doors on top with or without a solid door above that. I don't think "36 is possible but thought maybe a 30" flanked by a 6" wide tall wine holder thingy. There will be a run of regular upper and lower cabinets to the left of this cab. I'm thinking along the lines of abstrakt white, with darkish wood accents (cover panels, the odd doors, maybe the tall cabinets and part of the island etc) and the akvist(sp?) glass doors. I would also like to have a 15" wide tall cabinet that would compliment the wider cabinet. You see these will be on ether side of a tall window. Ideally I would like the 15" to hold a hanging file folder in the bottom drawer.
I know, I know I'm asking a lot and you're probably thinking she should be going custom but from what I've read here you are pretty creative and very resourceful.
One other thing, I would like to make a 24" cabinet into a recycle center. I think I can buy the deep drawer for this?? From what I have learned here I would attach the door to the drawer so it would be pullout and I should have enough at the top for a shallow drawer. Am I right??
I am dreading putting the order together for our kitchen. Promise to start posting pictures once things are really underway. I have a rough sketch which I will post a little later today or tomorrow. Unfortunately our kitchen has wierd angles and the planner doesn't work for me. Plus it keeps crashing!!! Thx again for your advise. T
tumbilli, you should click on the link below my name in my signature titled "photo dump" it's my photobucket album of the kitchen i just finished. go to the second page as the first page is mostly views and house shots (i plan on rearranging soon, but haven't had the opportunity)... the 2nd page shows a lot of after shots and i went cabinet by cabinet. i am no longer limited by what ikea's catalog says, you give me holes and i'll rearrange how i think the cabinet should be in the space...
ok, i'll attack only the 80" tall cab right now as my toddler really wants her mommy, the 3 drawers on the bottom is a good place to start the calculations. figure that is a standard base cabinet, so that is 30" off the 80" leaving 50" the glass doors come in 30 and 39 height so you either go with 30" tall and have 20" to figure out or you go with 39" and have 11.
you could do the 30/20 and have 2" of filler somewhere in the design or you could do the 39/11 and leave and open "display shelf" of the 11 inches (cause i don't think the 12" door would work)
that's my 60second thought, i'll try to give more thought later... sorry this is a drive by post.
That was a very helpful drive by post. I think I'm getting it. I'm going to sit down and do some math - used to be good at it. No worries - tend to your toddler!! I'm in no rush. Thx again PS If I have more questions for you down the road shall I'll simply continue with this thread. Not to familiar yet on how to use the forum.
depends on the questions. if you're asking me specifically this thread is fine, but if you'd like the wealth of knowledge in this community (and it's a different topic) create a new thread.
soon enough you'll get the hang of what measurements work and how to factor them in. in my mom's little kitchen i had more than 8 actual mods and several tweaks as well... i don't like rules.
