Nice job!

That looks like an ideal candidate for a modification article! I love the technique of using the metal spline for joining the doors. That's very cool.

Thanks! I'm very happy with how it worked out. I actually made a few minor adjustments. I re-oriented the drawer hardware to use the template previously posted, meaning I had to redrill (and fill 1) some holes. Why? Well, when I measured the bins I bought, I planned it so that I could stack 2 big ones with one small one on top of it...4 stacks of those. That maximized the space. I had a couple of extra inches of height, so when I decided to try the drawer approach, I figured I'd have plenty of head room. Turns out I was about 1/4" short using the pantry attachment points.

So I moved the hardware down 1-1/4" and got my headroom back. I also made some caps for the hardware tie plates out of those butterscotch plug covers, as well as sanded and re-lacquered the inside of the doors.

kisaacs, I would love to have a second drawer, but I don't think I'd be able to swing it and still store as many of these containers as I'd like. I'd almost certainly not be able to have 2 talls and 1 short. Great idea though, don't think I didn't consider it!

I'd be happy to write it up as an article, or if that is somebody else's "duty" then they're more than welcome to write it up for me.

Cheers,

Rich

Rich, great job! It's truly a professional thought process.

You should be proud. And I agree about the article! Heck, your first post is pretty much all that is needed!

Well done. But a question...

I am getting ready to do something very similar with a 15 in. base cabinet, but I was afraid that there would be too much tension/leverage between the handle at the top and where the door is attached on the bottom. I've got the deeper drawer with the side posts and I even saved the template.

Is this a problem?

Well the wife liked it, so SUCCESS!!!

packmann57, I don't think that's going to be a problem. In fact, I think the 12" and other pullout base cabinets are designed that way. I haven't noticed any problems with mine, but sure I've only had it for a few hours

Are you planning on converting a single 15" base cabinet, or is it a 30" with 2 15" doors?

I was planning to convert a single 15" door front (the dimension on the box say it's 15 x 24) on a base cabinet with one upper drawer. My wife wants to use it to store baking stones vertically.

I'm really encouraged by your success. I may just go for it. Thanks.

packman, you're talking about doing a pretty standard install... just use a 15" deep drawer. if you want the template in "real life" you need to buy a rationell drawer front as well, that is the package the template comes in. Don't know if you know but you can also have extra drawers inside.
here's a 24" using a single door (instead of the fabulous "joined" look Boykster did) with a single drawer on front and some internal drawers. my mom uses this for her cooking supplies (along with a 21" i had to modify to create)

to make a 15" pullout you don't need any special tools other than a drill and screwdriver

boykster, we plan to do something similar, so it's nice to see it here. In our case, we'll be joining two drawer fronts to function as one pullout. I love the center spline - it should add a lot of stability.

Your pullout looks great!
