Hello EveryoneI am new to this forum so please forgive me if I have posted to the wrong message box. Here is my idea and I am looking for feedback....Take a 79" tall 19"wide by 22" deep PAX cabinet and a full door.Â*For clarity in visualizing this lay the cabinet on its side.Â*Build a single drawer the size of the whole cabinet. Use the door as the drawer front. Use 4 Hafele full extension drawer-slides (2 per side, top and bottom actually) to hold the drawer. Build drawer divisions which will become little shoe cubicles. The depth of the cubicle is the width of the cabinet. The height of the cubicles may vary as some rows are tall to accomodate boots and some are very low to accomodate sandals. The width of each cubicle will be about 7" so I can have 3 rows front to back. This pull-out shoe storage will maximize the use of space and hide neatly when not in use. What do you think? Any build ideas? Thanks, Jaime
The only problem (in terms of engineering) that I can see is because the unit is so wide, you might have some sagging issues in the center of it. Using glides spaced evenly along the bottom of the shelf would probably give you more stability than having them on the sides.
Otherwise, it sounds like a great idea! Where are you planning on locating this unit?
Hey! Welcome to the forums! Sounds like you have an interesting idea (and a lot of shoes)!
I'm not the engineer around here, but I do have a suggestion....take a look at Lee Valley's offering of glides. I don't know where you're pricing your Hafele items, but I've almost passed out when looking at their items at Cabinet Accessories Unlimited. Rockler and Woodcraft are two others (that I'm aware of) that offer a good quality product at a reasonable price. All are good companies to deal with.
So...what led you to this idea for your shoes?
Susan

Thanks for your reply everybody.

I should have said "image the cabinet laying on its side so that it looks like a drawer". This is why I think evaperconti may have thought of the unit as being too wide.

The cabinet is actually installed vertically in small walk in closet. That is why the drawer slides are at the "top" and "bottom".

I am concerned that with the "shoe pantry" pulled all the way out it will tend to tilt forward out of its frame. Then again maybe not.

The "shoe pantry" will be shared by my wife and I probable around 70%-30% in her favor!

thanks for your comments,

jaime
Oh I get it now...I was picturing this long, low drawer! I guess I kind of put it under the bed in my mind. I do things like that LOL
Sure, you can use it for a pullout, just like the tall pantry pullout for the kitchen. And, just like the tall pullout, you don't have to attach ALL the shelves to the door, just the top and the bottom. The others can slide in and out independent of the door. That will solve your front-heavy problem.
Now use that vertical surface and mount a full length mirror on the door front!
And 70-30 seems extremely generous on her part LOL
