How to make a blind corner upper cabinet?

I'm helping my sister with her Abstract Red kitchen and we're using a 49" blind cabinet on the base, but we couldn't fit a corner cabinet on the uppers. So we're making a blind corner instead of the Ikea advice of void in the corner.

So we only ordered on door for a 30" wall cabinet and we were told to use filler strips to hide 3" to the corner. We were told that the cabinet that fits against this won't open unless it had 3" clearance. That seemed too muh and would screw up our choices, so we ordered a 21" cabinet and allowed 2" for clearance to the corner.

So my question is does anybody have any advice about this kind of modification or are there any photos of attempts to do this?

Thanks so much

I've been blogged!
Re: How to make a blind corner upper cabinet?

The adjacent door will open with or without a filler strip, but you will get more swing with more filler and a handle that protrudes less from the front of the cabinet. I think you'll do fine, regardless of the handle you choose, if you use a filler around 3/4" - a cover panel or piece of decor strip will work.

One thing you might want to do, though, is order that second door and install it normally, even though it won't operate. I think you'll just like that look better.

Re: How to make a blind corner upper cabinet?

Thanks Chuck! Good idea about the 2nd door. I was thinking things might fall out the back and inbetween the 2 cabinets behind the filler strip if I don't put something there. A door solves 2 problems with 1 solution.

I sure like this place - I'm glad I joined!

Re: How to make a blind corner upper cabinet?

Another modification for upper corner that ou might find interesting. We don't have room for a corner cab because of some odd angles on a nearby wall so in our 90 dgree corner I will have a space along each wall of about 18 inches and to either side will have 36 x 39 uppers. This leaves about 8-9 inches of space on angle between the two uppers. I plan to cut a 12 x 39 upper to this 8-9 inch width, slide it in between the two uppers on angle, support it and finish with frosted glass as avsikt, framed with either cabinet deco strip or more likely alumnum to match the the other asvikt cabs. The entire run of cabinets will be finish below with panels and above with deco strip on it's side, square edge out. This framed piece will be removable and inside will be xenon linear lights - I thought this light box would add a nice modern feature. There will be another one in another corner of the kitchen...Tumbilli
