it was eva... and the cast is just that "old school" fluorescent that is evocative of your grandma's old kitchen (or at least that's how my mom explained it )
hm, it's probaby the same light. i had a fluorescent light in my kitchen up until about a month ago, so maybe that's why it doesn't seem unappealing to me?
i just don't mind fluorescent lights. i had the 1980's built in box in my kitchen which i was happy to remove and update with recessed lights, but i stayed fluorescent... the thing that bugs me about the long tubes (especially older fixtures) is the flicker...
but in california we have title 24 (which i am thrilled about) so one has to fall in love with fluorescent regardless
can't wait to see the shelf, wonder if my ikea will have it monday when i go to help my sister buy her kitchen...
thanks for the info!
Having just installed these as shelves in the bedroom and planned for the bathroom remodel ...
- Nian is the old name, with sizes noted as 17", 22", and 28". Rationell is the new name, to follow with the other kitchen accessories, complete with a new stock number. The sizes are now nominal (ie. 30" instead of 28"), making it easier to folks to figure out what goes to what.
- The frosted glass contributes a good bit of the "yellow" light that had been brought up previously. I removed the bottom glass (remove the 2 screws on the non-switch side and slide the glass out), and it works a lot better.
- The underlying frame is extruded aluminum, but I sure wouldn't try mounting a door onto it, since it's designed for static perpendicular force, not the rotational force that occurs with the using of a hinge. Best bet is to just cut a big hole through the "roof" of the lower cabinet ... and ditch the bottom glass.

Reason: Corrected errorenous info.
dulci, there is a big stack of 22" wide nian light shelves at the e palo alto store. i was there monday and picked up 3 of them i'm going to use for a long lighted shelf above my fridge/pantry area. at 24.99 each it's a great deal! i don't mind the color of the light either...fluorescent and LED's will be what we're all using eventually!
i just put the rationell shelf together last night...it does not come with a power cord. it comes with a cord, that needs to be plugged into another cord (sold separately for $5.00 to be plugged into the wall. there is also a cord you can but that let's you plug six shelves into one base so they can all be operated with one on-off switch.
i decided to just use one as the bottom of my horizontal cabinet stack as a replacement for undercabinet lighting.
