Re: expert mod help needed!

thanks Narf, that's mighty kind of you. But my prayers were answered with the new Rationell shelf.
That and the fact that the 3 i bought (got the last 28") are for an unknown project for an unknown room in an unknown house we'll buy when we finally sell ours.

Re: expert mod help needed!

Picked up a Rationell version from the AS-IS (missing switch/hardware) ... and it measures out to 37-1//2"! Which begs the question ... are these only intended for horizontal cabinets now?

Re: expert mod help needed!

i think that is just one size they're introducing... in one of the previous posts it was mentioned that they'll start calling them by cabinet size: 18, 24, 30
to me that means that there will be more sizes.

Re: expert mod help needed!

i noticed that though my nian lights were labeled 22" they're actually 22.5" - annoying when those half inches can really count, but i guess i've just come to expect it.

Re: expert mod help needed!

devon, they are 22.5 to fit in the bottom of the 24" cabinet. so they rationell will be labeled 24" but really be 22.5"
ikea isn't all that great at the hand holding, which is why i'm thankful for this forum

Re: expert mod help needed!

Naturally, that won't explain why there's the Nian 17" (16-1/2" actual) ... the others (22"/28") rounded down.

That may be a reason why they have to offer all those meter tapes too. Screwy sizing convention!

Re: expert mod help needed!

I've installed 8 Nian shelves with my 8 30" Horizontal wall cabinets. I can offer some advice:

1) If you're going to stack 2 horizontal cabinets, you can only put the nian lighted shelf on the bottom of each horizontal wall cabinet. You can't put the NIAN lighted shelf on top. It just won't work with the horizontal hinges!

2) If you're going to stack 2 horizontal cabinets, make sure you leave the switch "on" and wire the cable to another separate switch. Stacking the cabinets will not allow you access to the upper cabinet nian shelf.

3) You also need to cut the Metal bracket that comes with the nian shelf to fit 30" cabinets! I found out the hard way...

Re: expert mod help needed!

FWIW, I picked up another Rationell light from AS-IS a few days ago, and it was designed to fit the 30" horizontal cabinet.

Perhaps the regular cabinet sized ones are going to be reintroduced later ...

Re: expert mod help needed!

The Carson store still has some 28-1/2" Nian shelves ...

Only thing is that they're still at $35. Granted, that is better than the $70 that it was, or what the Rationell costs.
